The portrait of Horatio (Ray) Milner (1889-1975) hangs above the fireplace mantle in the Milner House Sitting Room. Ray was a renowned philanthropist, businessman & Governor General recipient of the Companion of the Order of Canada along with three honourary doctorates. Born in Sackville NB, he attended Kings College and received his law degree from Dalhousie University and called to the bar in 1911. In WWI, Ray served with the Edmonton Fusiliers and met Catherine (Rina) Bury... while hospitalized in England - they married in 1919 residing in Edmonton AB and purchased what is now Milner House as their summer home from General Noel Money in 1937. Sadly, Rina passed away in 1952. Ray married Veronica Villiers FitzGerald in 1954 and they moved to 'Long Distance', the Milner estate. Ray was a dynamic yet quiet, humble man saying, "All I have ever done was what I was asked to do." Sharing a Giving Tuesday message from our VIU Foundation: On December 1, 2020, people and organizations all over the world come together for Giving Tuesday to give back to our communities through donations and volunteerism. One of our key areas is Milner Gardens & Woodland, a 70-acre site including wooded forest and old estate in the heart of Qualicum. Milner boasts a beautiful tea house where visitors can enjoy traditional high tea, scenic walks through the massive old gr...owth forest along the shoreline, an extensive food garden for educational purposes, and an unrivaled rhododendron garden with over 500 individual species! As much of Milner Garden’s revenue is generated by visitors and events, closures due to COVID-19 have severely impacted the operation. You can help preserve this beautiful spot by supporting Milner Garden’s general operations. The Shoots with Roots program at Milner Gardens & Woodland introduces elementary school students to local ecosystems, gardening, and natural sciences while also creating opportunities for exploration and play in nature.
