Dental First Aid - What To Do We know dental emergencies can be scary and overwhelming whether it’s happening to you or a loved one. Remain calm, perform first aid, and arrange to see a medical professional as soon as possible.... Here are some practical tips for common dental emergencies: Toothache Apply a cold compress to the area. You may be able to take the edge off your pain by taking a pain reliever like acetaminophen (ex. Tylenol) or ibuprofen (ex. Advil). Always follow the advice of your doctor and read the instructions on the bottle when taking any medication. Make a note of what medication, how much and the time it was taken so you can let us know when you come in. Knocked-Out Teeth Time is of the essence, we may be able to restore your natural tooth! If a whole tooth has been knocked out and is reasonably clean quickly and gently reinsert the tooth into its socket. If you can’t because you’re unsure or it hurts then save the tooth in a cup of milk. Make sure to call us Immediately. A knocked-out tooth is more likely to be saved if treated within the hour. Broken Teeth Rinse your mouth with warm water to wash away smaller fragments. If you are bleeding, hold a piece of sterile gauze on the area until bleeding stops. You may use a cold compress to relieve some of the pain and swelling. Call us immediately. We will work quickly to relieve your pain, heal your injury, and restore your tooth. Abscess Abscesses are infections that occur around the root of a tooth or in the space between the teeth and gums. Abscesses are a serious condition that can damage tissue and surrounding teeth, with the infection possibly spreading to other parts of the body if left untreated. Because of the serious oral health and general health problems that can result from an abscess, see your dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, to ease the pain and draw the pus toward the surface, try rinsing your mouth with a mild saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of table salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day. Protecting Your Teeth from The Very Start Fluoride Treatment: Children in particular benefit from fluoride treatment. As adult teeth come in, fluoride treatments help combat tooth decay through a process... called remineralization. Acids from plaque and from the food we eat can wear down tooth enamel by sapping teeth of certain essential minerals. Fluoride treatment stops and reverses this process making tooth enamel stronger and more resistant to decay. Dental Sealants: The biting surfaces of molars have plenty of grooves and fissures that can easily trap acidic plaque or food particles which may be difficult to clean. When children get new molars, dental sealant can be used to keep gunk out, protect their natural teeth and prevent decay. Dental sealants provide a protective shield for those vulnerable areas. Why opt for Sealants and Fluoride? Symptoms to Watch Out For Tooth pain can be unbearable and sometimes it seems like the only way to escape a toothache is to pull the tooth. We completely sympathize and want to provide you with quick relief and there may be options available to do so which also saves your tooth. Let us know if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: Severe tooth pain. Pain that worsens with pressure or chewing.... Jaw pain or stiffness. Swollen gums around the tooth or teeth. Signs of gum disease such as discoloration, bleeding or a bad odor. The Treatment Plan: There are many reasons a tooth may require removal. They include (but are not limited to) the extraction of baby teeth that have trouble exfoliating on their own, the extraction of teeth for orthodontic treatment, and the extraction of teeth due to pain or infection. Here is how we go about extracting the tooth: Looking for Solutions: You may think extraction is the only way to find relief or feel like it is inevitable but there may be other ways to quickly provide relief while saving the tooth. The best-case scenario is to keep you healthy, relieve any pain and preserve your tooth. Before any teeth are removed, we will examine you and speak to you about your options. The Removal Process: Based on the preference of the dentist and the patient, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the areas where the tooth will be extracted. Sedation may also be available if it’s required. We use a minimally invasive technique to remove teeth as gently as possible. We want you to feel comfortable and have a fast recovery. Approximate Cost of a Dental Extraction The cost of dental extractions can vary widely. With a typical insurance plan, a dental extraction commonly costs about $160 $200+ out of pocket. We would be happy to provide you with a quote in advance to submit to your insurance provider to find out what your out-of-pocket costs would be. Without insurance, you can expect to pay approximately $250 to $600+ per tooth. The cost of a dental extraction will vary depending on a number of factors. See more

What problems can poor dental health cause? The Mayo Clinic, as well as a report from ABC News, highlight some major areas of concern: Cardiovascular disease: In a nutshell, this means heart disease. The bacteria from inflammation of the gums and periodontal disease can enter your bloodstream and travel to the arteries in the heart and cause atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Atherosclerosis causes plaque to develop on the inner walls of arteries which thicke...n and this decreases or may block blood flow through the body. This can cause an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The inner lining of the heart can also become infected and inflamed a condition known as endocarditis. Dementia: The bacteria from gingivitis may enter the brain through either nerve channels in the head or through the bloodstream, that might even lead to the development of Alzheimer's disease. Respiratory infections: The Journal of Periodontology warns that gum disease could cause you to get infections in your lungs, including pneumonia. While the connection might not be completely obvious at first, think of what might happen from breathing in bacteria from infected teeth and gums over a long period of time. Diabetic complications: Inflammation of the gum tissue and periodontal disease can make it harder to control your blood sugar and make your diabetes symptoms worse. Diabetes sufferers are also more susceptible to periodontal disease, making proper dental care even more important for those with this disease. As you can see, brushing and flossing keep more than your pearly whites healthy -- they might also prevent serious illnesses. Poor dental care is also a possible factor in other conditions, such as immune system disorders, weak bones, and problems with pregnancy and low birth weight. #vivadentaldryden #dentalcare #dentalknowledge #dentalclinic #dentist #toothdecy #diseases #strokes #cardiovasculardisease #cancer #oralcancer #oralcancerscreening #checkoutourwebsite See more
