#IRemember Ripley My fiancé and I will always attest that we went to the animal shelter for a dog. I have never owned a cat, and was a dog-lover through and through. Adopting a cat was not in the cards, until we met Ripley. She walked right up to us at the shelter and did not leave us alone until we signed those adoption papers. Came for a dog, left with a senior, long-haired cat with shelter anorexia. I could not have known the impact of this little creature, especially one ...that was completely unplanned. Having just experienced two major losses in our families, we really wanted to introduce something cute and furry into our home to smother with love. She helped both of us through our own grief and made our home feel ‘lighter.’ She had a delightful temperament and was a constant source of entertainment. The best part of my day was seeing her in our top floor window, paws against the window, excitedly waiting for us to come home. However bad your day was, she made you forget that immediately. In January of this year, Ripley died suddenly from congestive heart failure. We were fortunate enough to have employers who understood the weight of the relationship one has with their pets, and the kindness of our families and friends to help us through. Some feel silly mourning a pet, or see it as less significant than losing a person, but you truly can’t measure love and loss that way. Ripley left a mark on us, and as her final joke, I am now a cat person. We adopted a cat from a local animal services centre recently and know we will continue to adopt animals to give them the best life we can, like we did with Rip. They always say you don’t pick a cat - they pick you. I feel very strongly that we needed her as much as she needed us- #IRemember Ripley today and on many more days like this. Talking about death and dying isn’t easy. Talking about our grief with others can be just as difficult. But we recognize how important it is to have a safe space to share our stories of love and loss. Starting October 26 to November 1, we will be sharing personal stories, quotes, pictures from our communities in memory of those we’ve lost and continue to grieve in honour of the Dying Matters campaign #IRemember. If you would like to join us in sharing your stories of someone ...you’d like to remember on your own social media, be sure to use the hashtag #IRemember and tag Dying Matters who will be sharing various stories throughout the week. If you'd like to read more about this event, visit: https://www.dyingmatters.org/page/i-remember Please reach out if you need us. Our Grief and Bereavement Support Services can help.
