Kingsbridge Retirement Community is elated to share that we are partnering with VON, Meals on Wheels, to deliver care packages this Christmas season to isolate...d seniors in Kingston. What a unique opportunity! According to a report on isolation, published by the Canadian National Seniors Council, lack of connection with others can have extreme detrimental effects on a seniors’ wellbeing. Thus, the creation of our ‘Spread the Cheer, connecting with Seniors’ campaign’. Kingsbridge is rallying support from local businesses and community members of Kingston to prepare 240 bundles of goodies that will be delivered by Meals on Wheels volunteers during the Christmas season. Call us at 613-583-2555 to learn more and/or email us to make a pledge of $20 per care kit. Email: [email protected]

To Our Community As we enter the summer we need to be aware of the heat that comes with the summer especially during heat waves. Below is some useful information that we should all be aware of. Health Risks of Extreme Heat: Know When to Get Help... You can become ill when you are exposed to too much heat, especially if you are doing too much for your age and physical condition. Adverse health effects that can occur as a direct result of exposure to excessive heat include: heat cramps: symptoms/signs include painful muscular cramps, usually in the legs or abdomen heat edema: symptoms/signs include swelling of hands, feet and ankles heat exhaustion: symptoms/signs include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, fainting. heat stroke: symptoms/signs include headache, dizziness, confusion or other altered mental state and fainting. Skin may be hot and dry, or the individual may be sweating due to high body temperature. This is a medical emergency that can prove fatal. Increases in other health problems can also be seen, especially for those with other chronic medical conditions such as heart conditions. Symptoms of heat illness: dizziness or fainting nausea or vomiting headache rapid breathing and heartbeat extreme thirst (dry mouth or sticky saliva) decreased urination with unusually dark yellow urine changes of behaviour in children (like sleepiness or temper tantrums) If you have any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink liquids. Thank you to the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox & Addington for your help in funding our VON clients in Greater Kingston and Napanee during this difficult time. Your help has funded many clients from various VON programs and have helped our most vulnerable clients remain safe in their homes. "Funded in part by the Government of Canada's New Horizons for Seniors Program" Quote from Minister of Seniors:... While physical distancing is essential to protecting seniors from COVID-19, it risks isolating them from their community. That is why the Government of Canada is proud to work with United Way Canada to help support the needs of seniors during this difficult time. By using local expertise, this funding will help provide support tailored to the unique, local needs of seniors across the country. As we work together to flatten the curve and slow the spread of the virus, the government is supporting Canadians every step of the way. The Honorable Deb Schulte, Minister of Seniors

VON Greater Kingston 23.04.2020

Happy National Nurses Week! Thousands of strong women and men have brought their skills and commitment as nurses to VON. This week we celebrate them. VON’s first charter, written in 1897, spoke about our purpose as follows:... To establish and maintain visiting nursing service in Canada; To engage and direct the activity of nurses to undertake the care of the sick in their homes, to demonstrate nursing methods, and to aid in the prevention of disease and the maintenance of health; To assist in establishing and maintaining the highest possible standard of efficiency for all nursing services. It's remarkable that these words, written more than 120 years ago, are still so true today. From all of us - Thank you for all that you do!

VON Greater Kingston 06.04.2020

May 11-17 is #NationalNursingWeek! We want to thank #nurses across Canada, including our nursing team at VON, who are courageously providing care during this unprecedented and rapidly changing time. You are keeping us healthy and safe, and for that we could not be more #grateful.
