I'd like to acknowledge all of our wonderful teachers on this special day. Things have been challenging and a little scary for you during these unprecedented times. Stay strong, you're doing an amazing job. Although it may not seem like it at times, please know that you are appreciated.
The following is a statement from Brad Johns, Progressive Conservative Aboriginal Affairs Critic, recognizing Treaty Day: Today, I am adding my voice to all Can...adians in acknowledging and celebrating Treaty Day. October 1st is made more significant in Nova Scotia as it also marks the first day of Mi’kmaq History Month. Treaty Day honours the treaty of 1752 and celebrates the peaceful agreement between the Mi'kmaq people and the Crown. As the Aboriginal Affairs Critic I respect the invaluable history of the contributions of the Mi'kmaq people. My Progressive Conservative colleagues and I stand with all Nova Scotians in commemorating Treaty Day. As a province, we have more work to do ahead of us. We have come a long way, but must be undivided in our respect for the land, reflective on our past mistakes, and dedicated to learning and educating each other on Nova Scotia’s more than 11,000 year-old history.
Today is #OrangeShirtDay2020, a time to learn, listen, and reflect on the atrocities committed on Indigenous youth as part of Canada’s residential school system. The annual Orange Shirt Day on September 30th opens the door to global conversation on all aspects of Residential Schools. It is an opportunity to create meaningful discussion about the effects of Residential Schools and the legacy they have left behind. A discussion all Canadians can tune into and create bridges with each other for reconciliation. A day for survivors to be reaffirmed that they matter, and so do those that have been affected. Every Child Matters, even if they are an adult, from now on. Learn more at https://www.orangeshirtday.org/.
The Musquodoboit Valley office of the Halifax Public Libraries will be re-opening today from 10am to 1pm. Why not pay them a visit to welcome them back?
The Colchester-East Hants Public Library is celebrating their 70th Anniversary. I visited the Stewiacke Libray this afternoon to help celebrate by participating in their Card Campaign. Why not stop in to see everything the library has to offer and sign-up or renew your library membership. Don't forget to wish them a happy 70th anniversary!
I'm always proud to call myself a Nova Scotian, especially when our spirit shines so brightly during the darkest hours. Let's take a moment of reflection. Remember the fallen, and offer thoughts and prayers to the survivors, the families and all of the first responders and communities that came together to help each other.
Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. Today is a day for raising awareness and sharing resources to prevent suicide from occurring, but it shouldn't just be this one day. We need to work together, every day, to spread the word that help is available. Share the resources, open up dialogues to end stigma around seeking help. Check in with loved ones, friends, neighbours and colleagues to let them know they are not alone. Especially during these trying times. It takes all of us working together to prevent suicide.
A Covid-19 update will begin shortly.
I wanted to wish everyone a safe, happy and (relatively) stress-free first day back to school. There's a lot happening right now, but you've got this!
A back to school update is about to begin. I really hope for the sake of our teachers, parents and students that there will be some answers provided to ensure a safe return to school.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. I hope for a safe and speedy recovery for everyone else affected.
Please be advised of potential COVID-19 exposures below.
There are now six active cases. It's scary, but the numbers are still low. I wish them all a speedy recovery.
