A must share from G Adventures. Shopping local while you travel is a great way to support local communities. But not always. When it comes to souvenirs, there’s a chance they were mass-produced in another country all together with that country getting most of the profits. And you’re not shopping local if you’re buying foreign goods. For communities that rely heavily on tourism as a primary source of income, this is a serious problem. Instead of spending money on high-quali...ty, handmade goods from local artisans, unknowing travellers are purchasing cheap, inauthentic replicas that have been shipped in from thousands of miles away. This issue has caused so much lost local revenue that, as far back as 2015, the Egyptian government imposed a ban on all imported souvenirs. But as a responsible traveller, we know you want to help keep local communities living well. So here’s a tip: if you see piles of identical souvenirs in multiple shops, they’ve probably been mass-produced, potentially outside the country. By avoiding those and actively asking around for locally made goods, you’re well on your way to making a difference. Travel can change the world. But first we need to change travel.
