ATTENTION SNOWMOBILERS STAGING AND DEPARTING FROM THE VOYAGEURS' LODGE. Please my mindful of our neighbours and do not sled across their front lawns. Once the Carp R. is frozen you can cross the highway and ride the shoreline to cross the Carp. River. You can ride right beside the ditch on your way to the Carp R. bridge. Please proceed with caution as this is a neighbourhood, and be watchful for any children who may be outside. Please do not revve up your cans and make ...unnecessary loud noise when proceeding to the Carp River hill. If you take our trail through the back yard up to the Carp R. please stay off of our x-country ski trail. A friend grooms that and we really need that two track trail for x-country skiing. BREAKING NEWS FROM THE LODGE! Snowmobile staging is now available at the north end of the lodge. There is not much snow yet and the Carp River is not yet fully froze but hopefully in Jan. that will happen. This is a courtesy service to thank all of our sledders who visit us so often in the open season. We are very thankful and just want to make things easier for you when heading up the Carp Rd for some winter fun. Here are some parking dos and don'ts. Do Park at the north ...end of the lodge up against and parallel to the north motel. Park against the tree line at the north end of lodge by stage area. I will keep it plowed. In these two spots there is room for probably a total of 5-6 trucks/trailers to park. After that the lot is full and you will have to find another place to park and sled. Be mindful of our neighbours on either side and use common sense. Don't Do not park infront of the Tesla Chargers. They must be accessible to Teslas. Do not park ontop of my inground gas tanks as I must keep them clear of snow. Please leave my main parking lot free so I can plow snow there while you are gone. Some other reminders. a) Unload and go. Please do not run your machines around our yard or our neighbours' yards as the loud machines can be disruptive. When you arrive back from your day of fun please do the same. Load and go. b) Check your area for garbage, oil containers etc. Do not leave anything behind. c) If you are gone for the weekend just let us know so we can keep an eye on your safe return. d) Do not block the main laneways as we and others have to come and go from our property. e) Lock your vehicle and remember that we are not responsible for your vehicle. Winter Lockdown Update From Batchawana Bay! Hello good friends and customers out there wherever you may be. We hope this post finds you well and healthy and safely tucked into your homes. Gail and I have been hunkered down here in Batchawana Bay during this Lockdown, and we have found many ways to keep ourselves busy. No trips south this year, but lots to do around here. We have xcountry skiis and hopefully this week we get a little more snow to be able to use them without ...hitting rocks and branches. Very little snow here this year. We have spent alot of time in the house painting. We (Gail mostly) has repainted our kitchen, dining room, main hallway, guest room, and next up is our bedroom. Freshened the whole place up. I have been very busy in my woodshop (aka the garage) making wood charcuterie boards, wall hangings, coffee tables, and a few other things. I have learned so much about working with epoxy resin and hardener, and alot of YouTube videos has got me through it. Alot of my projects I have sold to folks, and I am trying to build up an inventory to go into our River Rock Gift shop this spring. We are continuing to make upgrades to the lodge. In early winter, we refloored two guest rooms and the laundry room, and this March we are pouring a commercial grade epoxy floor in our Cookhouse kitchen (Mystic Rains Const. is). We are also re-plumbing some of our Cookhouse Kitchen with new sinks and more sinks (Superior North Plumbing). Gonna be a great reno for all of our kitchen staff. Our plan is to open the General Store sometime in mid to late April, and open the Cookhouse when we are permitted to . We expect it will be like last year - take out only, then patio, then indoor dining with limited capacity. So we hope one and all have a safe and healthy second half of winter, and we so look forward to seeing you all again this Spring. Cheers good Friends - Frank and Gail. So you wonder what Gail and I do during the long cold winters. Well, we work at some reno projects, we paint, we cook, we bake, Gail learns to master her Cricut machine. But what I really like to do Is put on CBC radio in the garage, and work with wood, resin and epoxy. Charcuterie Boards, wall hangings, log slab tables and that sort of thing. Below are some projects from the last winter. Alot of Youtube lessons at night. Right now I am making two log slab coffee tables and a whole whack of charcuterie boards in Bird's Eye Maple. And so it is that year 18 is in the books. The Closed For Season signs are up, the gates are across the hwy entries, and the whole enchilada is ours alone. Oak...ley, the lodge dog, has free reign on the place, and her and the squirrels are ecstatic about the free range. My maintenance staff member, Nancy, and I have some renovating and cleanup to do, and then after that, it is down time. In fact, we do have a few interesting things up our sleeve for the winter. It is hard to believe that on a cold Jan. 30th night in 2003, we arrived here to begin this journey of building a destination resort and Trans Canada Highway travel stop. But here we are, still going strong and still loving it. Every roof, septic system, water system, and guest room has been rebuilt or renovated over the years, and in some cases we are on round 3 of renovating. The inspiration to build a lodge themed around the fur trade, the voyageurs, and the importance of this trade route along Lake Superior to Fort William came from the great Canadian author, Peter C. Newman, and his books chronicling the life and times of the Hudson's Bay Company and its adventurers. The significance of its company men, Canada' indigenous peoples, and the importance of the fur trade to Canada's development as a nation are all highlighted in everything we do here at the lodge So as we retreat into our winter dwelling, with sporadic periods of fritter frying for Christmas, or filling River Rock gift orders, we wish all of you a safe and healthy winter season. Called Brad Radburne from Superior North Plumbing and he was there in under 2 hours. Found an incoming line compromised, replaced it, primed the pump and he got us back up and running before first guests checked in. For all your plumbing needs in the Soo and north shore of Superior call these guys. Very reliable, trustworthy and just good guys all around.

Dear Voyageur Friends and Customers: In light of the recent spike in Covid-19 cases in Ontario, Gail and I, and our staff, have decided to finish the Cookhouse season off with Take Out only. Take out only will begin this Monday Sept. 21st (hey the first day of fall), and continue until we close the Cookhouse on Sunday Oct. 11th. With the more than tripling of cases in Ontario in the last 3 weeks to over 400 daily, we feel it is the responsible thing to do for the safety of ou...r staff and customers. We recognize that many of these cases are in larger population centres, but here at the lodge on the Trans Canada highway, we serve travellers from all over Canada everyday. Our staff have remained safe and healthy through the last 5 months of serving Canadians, and we really want to finish the year off on that note. They have worked tirelessly with masks and shields on, sanitizing tables and chairs and equipment continuously, and monitoring the social distancing of guests. We will continue to offer our great burgers and fish dinners in a take out manner, and we will ensure that our lodge guests are fed with meals to go back to their rooms at night. The Take Out service at the Cookhouse will be open daily from 11:30am till 7:00pm, and you can call in, order online, or order in person. All motel lodge guests will be given a complimentary morning package with a muffin, juice, fruit and yogurt so that they can start their day off with some nourishment. This is a big decision taken by us, and it comes after alot of thought and discussion with our staff. We feel it is the best thing for us to do right now at this moment in the Pandemic. Our General Store/Agency Store will still be open daily from 8am till 7pm, and our guest rooms are still available for travellers. Our Apple Fritters are still being sold daily but you can expect that by 2-3pm they will be sold out. River Rock Gifts will be open Thurs. - Sunday from 11am till 6pm for the next few weekends, and again will be watching Covid movements to make decisions there. We remind all guests who go indoors into one of our shops that masks are required, social distance from others, and sanitize your hands upon entry. The fall colours this year are amazing, (and in full bloom right now) and we encourage all of you to make your yearly pilgrimage up the north shore to see the trees in their fantastic reds and golds. Giant sunflowers finally bloomed. Survived 90km winds and some big blows off the lake all season long. One is over 10ft tall. Thanks Kim Pickard for the seedlings to start. Bring on the birds and chipmunks to feast on the bounty found in these gems.

Ok so the big lake churned up real good till it reached the boilin point. Wind, Rain, Tunder, and Lightnin' Gonna be real good wave watchin' today. Check out Sawpit Bay, Hibbard Bay, Alona Bay and points north. The Beaches North (Havilland, Harmony, Batchawana and Pancake) may not be very good for sunbathing today, but they will be great for wave crashing. Give it a try.... Motorcycles be careful in those cross winds. And remember - we may run out of Apple Fritters in the late afternoon. Yesterday was 700 fried and sold and then our bakers had to tap out. Our cooks, bakers, servers, housekeepers, dishwashers, gas attendants, and store clerks will be labouring today on this Labour Day so you do not have to.
