Meet The Artsist: Gershon Iskowitz (1921 1988) Born on this day in 1921.... Over the course of his career, Iskowitz developed a distinctive form of artistic expression which resists association with any particular art movement. The work produced in Canada after his arrival in 1949 was based on personal memories of the Holocaust. This gradually gave way to painting the landscape around Parry Sound in the mid-1950s, using watercolour for his experiments in abstraction. By 1960, he had embraced abstraction. Gershon Iskowitz’s art was forever changed after a 1967 Canada Council grant allowed him to charter an aircraft to fly over the sub-Arctic landscape and the coast of Hudson Bay. His most iconic paintings have roots in this episode, and channel both the literal vision and ephemeral sensation of catching fleeting glimpses of the ground through gaps in the cloudscape. In 1975, Iskowitz explained: People say, oh, Gershon Iskowitz is an abstract artistBut it’s a whole realistic worldthe experience, out in the field, of looking up in the trees or in the sky, of looking down from the height of a helicopter. So what you do is try to make a composition of all those things, make some kind of reality: like the trees should belong to the sky, and the ground should belong to the trees, and the ground should belong to the sky. Everything has to be united. In a moment when we are all so strongly tethered to the terrestrial realm, unable to board flights, the impression of broad skies and uninhibited flight feels especially poignant, and beckons strongly. Imagine Iskowitz, given the gift of zooming up and above his surroundings, of seeing the familiar made new and almost alien. Many of us cannot remember our first trip in an airplane, and take for granted that startling moment when we slip the surly bonds of earth and gain the perspective of birds, of the heavens themselves. Iskowitz’s paintings remind us of the marvel of the skies, and how sublime that experience of the infinite can be. For more works by Gershon Iskowitz: https://bit.ly/gershoniskowitz2020

From the collection of Montreal gallerist Jean-Pierre Valentin comes this wonderful portrait attributed to Théophile Hamel, which is included in The Canadian Salon auction, online from October 17-22. In his catalogue, Raymond Vézina states that the liveliness of the face in this portrait makes one think more of famed Quebec portraitist Antoine Plamondon than of Hamel. From the age of 16, Hamel apprenticed under Plamondon, and would remain under his tutelage for the next si...x years, learning the European-style of painting and portraiture. After leaving Plamondon’s workshop, Hamel travelled to Europe in 1843 to 1846, staying in Rome, Venice, London and Paris. Upon his return to Canada, Hamel received many commissions for portraits and religious compositions from the bourgeoisie and government officials. In 1853, he was appointed the official painter of the government of Canada tasked with creating portraits of all high-ranking government officials from both Upper and Lower Canada We invite you to browse the catalogue for this carefully curated auction: https://bit.ly/thecanadiansalonoctober2020 Lot 33 Attributed to Théophile Hamel (1817 - 1870), Canadian PORTRAIT DE J.M. Meet The Artist William George Richardson Hind (1833 - 1889)... William Hind was born in Nottingham, England in 1833, and appears to have followed his older brother Henry Youle Hind to Canada in 1852. After a brief sojourn in England, where he studied the work of Millais, Hunt and Rossetti, Hind returned to Canada to join his brother’s expedition to the Moisie River in Quebec in 1861. On this trip, the artist produced over 100 watercolours, sketches and oil studies of the landscape and Indigenous subjects. His brother Henry published a book in 1863 detailing the expedition, entitled Explorations in the Interior of the Labrador Peninsula: The Country of the Montagnais and Nasquapee Indians. The Waddington’s West: Art from Western Canadian Collections auction closes today at 2 pm Eastern Time (11 am PT). My style is sometimes referred to as Potlatch Style as it comes from a tradition of ceremony which requires many masks to be made in a short period of time. It takes many years of practice and an understanding of balance in order to create a work that appears finished in a natural and instinctive manner, without seeming overthought. Beau Dick. Carving out a pioneering career before his early death, Amedeo Modigliani might be best known for his nudes. An apocryphal story notes that at his first and only solo show, the artist chose to display a series of nudes, which drew a tremendous crowd. So large was the crowd that it attracted the notice of a policeman. The officer was utterly scandalized by Modigliani’s choice to have depicted his models’ pubic hair, and demanded that the exhibition be shut down. The @tate expl...ains that this tale certainly caught the imagination of the public, and contributed to Modigliani's reputation as a scandalous playboy. Modigliani’s ‘modern women’ can be viewed as symbols of defiance and sexuality, with the Tate noting that their unapologetic stares and poses convey women in control of their bodies and their livelihoods (models at the time earned relatively good money). Lot 102, pictured below, represents an excellent opportunity to own your very own Modigliani. The tiny etching is included in our online Prints & Photography auction, which ends this Thursday beginning at 2 pm ET. Meet The Artist Kazuo Nakamura (19262002)... Born on this day in 1926. Kazuo Nakamura was one of the founding members of the abstract group known as Painters Eleven (19531960). While the younger members (Town, Ronald, Hodgson) practiced a rapid calligraphic style akin to American action painting, stylistic individualism prevailed among members of the group. Nakamura’s reductive, geometricized compositions stood out within this diversity of abstractions. Born in Vancouver, Nakamura was interned with his family at Tashme, British Columbia during the Second World War. He later received his artistic training at Hamilton Technical and Art School and Central Technical School in Toronto from 19481951. The two most important influences on his work, Nakamura explained, were Jock Macdonald, and Bauhaus teacher Laszlo Moholy-Nagy whose interest in connecting art and science paralleled his own. Nakamura sought to reveal the underlying patterns found in nature, believing art to be the artist’s concept or equivalent of their environment and thoughts. Nakamura’s paintings are exceptional examples of the productive possibility of fusing landscape and abstraction. For more works by Kazuo Nakamura visit: http://bit.ly/kazuonakamurawaddingtons

Meet The Artist Guido Molinari (19332004)... Born on this day in 1933. For decades, Guido Molinari was the driving force in Quebec abstract art. In 1956 he joined the Non-Figurative Artists Association of Montreal and was a founder of Les Plasticiens. They were dedicated to a cool, rational non-expressionistic aesthetic with special affection shown towards the example and achievements of the striped paintings of American, Barnett Newman. Molinari’s signature style featured primarily vertical stripes. The optical vibration at the intersection of the adjoining bands of colour caused uncanny perceptual quandaries for the viewer. Intellectually, one could discern the governing system of the placement of colours, yet perceptually the effect alluded our ability to hold the result into a stable gestalt. These optical paintings were the mainstay of his early career and generated many exhibitions worldwide. Yet by the 1970s he began to experiment with taming down the jarring effect of placing vastly different hue stripes adjacent to one another. Instead, he gravitated towards near monochromes, where each stripe was initially virtually indistinguishable from its neighbouring hue. These celebrated minimalistic offerings are referred to as his Quantifier paintings. His near monochromes remain relevant and celebrated to this day; one was showcased in Entangled: Two Views of Contemporary Canadian Painting (Vancouver Art Gallery, December 2017). It was presented as a continuing inspiration to a new generation of Quebec geometric painters. Molinari was the dominant force in Quebec abstraction through his art, his theoretical writings and his exemplary impact upon generations of young artists as a professor at Concordia University. His works are almost always on view in the permanent collection installations of Canada’s leading art museums. Key art historical texts devote extensive sections to chronicle his impact. His works have been avidly acquired by discerning private and corporate collectors and are included in the collections of every significant art museum in Canada and elsewhere.
