Happy Mother’s Day Weekend! The Waldan team and our families would like to extend a big thank you to all who supported us over these past few weeks. These have been uncertain times in which we found ourselves having to move our product in non-traditional ways. Through it all we have felt a great sense of community. As things have yet again changed, and the restrictions on garden centres have been eased, Waldan has decided to reduce the number of roadside stands available... as the pressure to sell in these non-traditional ways has been reduced. We would still like to offer the opportunity for local friends and neighbours to shop at our greenhouse location - 43069 Wills Road in Wainfleet - and through our online store. In addition we will keep one stand location in Wainfleet and one in Dunnville. We at Waldan want to wish all a Happy Mother’s Day and we encourage you to support your local retailers and growers by buying flowers for your mothers! We would also like to remind you that the weather is unseasonably cold. Please protect your plants! From the Waldan team and our families.

Top 10 under 40, 2015 Dan Newhouse, a Niagara College graduate, worked for a couple years at a large greenhouse farm in Niagara. One day he came home and suggested to his family that they, too, should get into the greenhouse industry. At the time the Newhouses were onion farmers. What a great suggestion that was!... In 16 years, the company has grown steadily under his leadership to a 200,000-square-foot, highly efficient potted plant greenhouse operation in Wainfleet, Ont. Newhouse constantly looks for and enthusiastically implements innovative technologies, while also striving for the highest quality of plants. He has worked with Flowers Canada Ontario on committees to find industry solutions to address issues related to water inspections of greenhouse facilities by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. He readily shares his insights and experiences for the benefit of the entire sector. He can often be found at the farm seven days a week, taking an active interest in each of the plants grown and ensuring that they all grow into a quality plant worthy of the Waldan Gardens name, said consultant Jamie Aalbers

Another top 10 under 40!! 2016 JENNIFER SHEARDOWN, Waldan Greenhouses, Wainfleet, Ontario Jennifer Sheardown has worked in the floriculture industry for about 12 years.... After graduation from Laurentian University and Niagara College, she worked for Baxter Corp. doing sterility testing and quality control, and then for the Junction Creek Stewardship Committee working to rehabilitate an urban stream, before moving on to Escarpment View Growers, and more recently to Waldan Greenhouses as assistant grower. She handles much of the watering, including fertilizer application decisions, PGR (growth regulator) decisions and applications to ensure plants are the appropriate stage and height at time of sale, which requires adapting to the changing seasonal climate within the greenhouse. Jennifer takes part in weekly meetings with consultants, sales reps, and industry experts. She attends numerous workshops and conferences and takes notes to bring back for other growers unable to attend. She also does insect scouting and maintains the banker plant/colemani system, and has a good understanding of the complexities of biological. She has exceptional leadership skills and is always working to learn new things.
