CIJA has been closely monitoring the developments around Foodbenders and its owner in Toronto, who has spread hateful antisemitic content on social media. Almos...t every classic trope about Jewish people can be found on their social media pages, including posts about Jews controlling the media and economy, interfering with democracy, poisoning the water, and comparing Jews to Nazis all masquerading as anti-Zionism. Zionism is the national liberation movement of the Jewish people, seeking emancipation from oppression in their ancestral homeland Israel. Rejection of Zionism is a rejection of the right of the Jewish people to self-determination, a right affirmed for all other peoples. A recent study of Jewish Canadians confirmed that a connection with Israel is a central tenet of Jewish identity across the diaspora. 92% of Jewish Canadians said they are attached to Israel, and almost 80% have visited at least once. Though political opinions and perspectives diverge, there is broad support for the fundamental right of Jewish people to have a national home. Simply put, the overwhelming majority of Jewish Canadians are Zionists. Being told we are not welcome at a place of business because of who we are is outrageous, and CIJA’s Legal Task Force is exploring all options available to hold Foodbenders and its owner to account. CIJA will also be raising our community’s concerns directly with Facebook Canada. It is inconceivable that the hate peddled by these social media accounts does not violate their policies/guidelines. There is no place for hate in a vibrant democratic society like Canada. We will address this challenge head on, but breaking the law should never be part of our community’s response. We deplore the vandalism that took place over the weekend. Such actions are not only illegal, but distract focus away from the issue we are trying to address. As we continue to fight antisemitism, we must be resilient and remain proud of our community’s part in building a vibrant and diverse Canadian society.

We're aware that a Toronto food store Foodbenders has made several antisemitic social media posts, including stating "Zionists Not Welcome." Zionism is by defi...nition a desire to liberate the Jewish people from millennia of oppression. It is no wonder that the vast majority of Jewish Canadians identify as Zionists. It is outrageous that Jews would be denied service at an establishment in our city just because of who they are. The days of "No dogs and no Jews" should be firmly behind us. We will not be silent in the face of efforts to make this form of antisemitism mainstream once again. We will be bringing this matter to the attention of the CIJA Legal Task Force and will pursue all options available to send a clear message that there is no place in Toronto for antisemitism.

As we celebrate Canada’s birthday, we’re also taking a moment to celebrate the many wonderful Jewish Canadians who’ve made a mark on this country. Rosalie Abell...a, daughter of Holocaust survivors, became the first Jewish woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004.
