LETTERING and MY OWN BOOKIn the Library of Graphic LiteratureIt's a slow book week. Funny enough, the only book I did get was Nobody is in Control from Black Mask...which I lettered. ...THIS WEEK...so, this week, with not much to talk about, I decided to feature Nobody is in Control by Patrick Kindlon, Paul Tucker with me on lettering and sound effects. I thought it would be fun to talk a little about how I do my lettering. SO, I shot this episode in the studio part of the Library and I think it came out pretty cool. And a call to action for all you letterers out there...go analogue!!! It looks so much better!!! This episode is dedicated to Todd Klein, without who's lettering lesson, I would have been lost!!! MEANWHILE, of course, check out this week's episode of this week's Thursday Comics Giant Size edition on the Top 10 DC Bronze Age Omnibuses!!! #comicbooks #graphicnovels #omnibus #nobodyisincontrol Lots of love and happy reading, pals!!! LOVE and the FALLIn the Library of Graphic LiteratureWell, it was back on the road this week. Military Road to be specific. I crossed the street to Bannerman Park and shot an episode by our beloved Bandstand. Kids going round and round...laughter filling the September air. Kinda neat....THIS WEEK...I have two Marvel Omnibuses to show off...including the Black Widow Strikes and Cloak & Dagger. Both of which have a lot of great memories for me. From DC Comics, comes Booster Gold: Future Lost and not much else. Magnetic brings us volume 2 of Irena: Children of the Ghetto and we wind it all up with Dark Horse's the True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. A very interesting week when it comes to graphic literature.MEANWHILE, of course, check out this week's episode of Thursday Comics and next week's Thursday Comics Giant Size edition on the Top 10 DC Bronze Age Omnibuses!!!AND on the stands next week is Black Mask's Nobody is in Control from Patrick Kindlon, Paul Tucker and myself on letters and a hint of inking.#blackwidow #comicbooks #graphicnovels #omnibus #cloakanddagger #marvelcomics #DCcomics #darkhorse #gerardway #fabulouskilljoysLots of love and happy reading, pals!!! SEX and CIVICSIn the Library of Graphic LiteratureI almost forgot what the Library was like after so many field trips recently. But I wasn't sure of the weather and decided to play it safe this week. Oh, and I'm running for a seat on City Council here in St. John's!!! Wish me luck!!!...THIS WEEK...I finally get my mitts on an Omnibus I've been dying to add to my collection since it was first solicited!!! I'm talking about the Wrath of the Spectre Omnibus from DC Comics. I do wax eloquent on this baby for awhile but it was one of the pillars of my comic book lovin' from the 1970's that I had to give it some special attention. It was also a favourite of my late brother Jeff and it's kinda sad that I can't share our love of the Spectre with him again. This week also brought us volume 1 of John Byrne's classic Superman: the Man of Steel!!! A cool relaunching of a classic character for sure!!! From DC we move on to D&Q and their volume 2 of John Stanley's Little Lulu, which is a must have for any fans of the classic comic from Dell. AND I have a look at George Takei's They Called Us Enemy from Top Shelf and then, as I prepare to end the show, I discovered a book left over from another week at the bottom of my pile and it's Mike Hawthorne's Happiness will Follow. So, I gave that a few quick words.MEANWHILE, of course, check out this week's episode of the Thursday Comics Giant Size edition on the Top 10 DC Silver Age Omnibuses!!!#thespectre #comicbooks #graphicnovels #superman #georgetakei #littlelulu #DCcomics #topshelf Lots of love and happy reading, pals!!! SEX & the SEASHOREIn the Library of Graphic Literature Today started out a bit cloudy but that cleared off pretty quickly and the sun came out. And it was once again, another beautiful day in the most easterly city on the North American continent, St. John's, Newfoundland. ...So, I summoned my good buddy, Chris O'Keefe and he gave me a lift out to Cuckold's Cove. It's on the other side of Signal Hill where I shot an episode recently and is one of the most beautiful little spots along the coastline of the City. I used to picnic there with my late wife, Linda and my daughter. It's one of those special spots of St. John's. Lots of soul and good memories. THIS WEEK...I feature a cool little box set of books from Abrams titled Marvel Comics Mini-Books and contains several little volumes reproducing the mini comics you could buy out of gumball style machines when I was a kid. I remember having a couple of these mini comics and I had to get this as it's part of my comic book youth. Speaking of Marvel, I picked up volume 22 of the Fantastic Four Masterworks edition which is chock o'block with John Byrne's classic run and worth picking up. From Image I got Fraction & Dwyer's the Last of the Independents and Brubaker & Phillips' Cruel Summer. D&Q brings us a sweet little memoir from Adrian Timone, the Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist and we round off a killer week with DC's the Power of Shazam by the incomparable Jerry Ordway!!! MEANWHILE, of course, check out next week's episode of the Thursday Comics Giant Size edition on the Top 10 DC Silver Age Omnibuses!!! KA-SPLAMM A BAM!!!! with THURSDAY COMICS #20 RATED: ADULT In this episode, we was eloquent about the King-Lee Affair, seven upcoming Omnibuses from Marvel, the ongoing DC Clusterfuckery, the mysterious disappearance of the IDW Publisher after only 5 days, our Eisner guesses, the Dynamite Apology and the beauty of forgiveness as brought to us by the example of the late John Lewis, Congressman and Eisner Award winner.

FIELD TRIPS, COMICS and WHALESIn the Library of Graphic LiteratureIt was a stunning day as I made my way out to the most easterly point in North America to shoot my latest episode. It was sunny and warm and a bit windy as you will hear. ...Cape Spear is a beautiful spot but it can also be extremely dangerous. People have been swept from the shoreline after getting too close and dragged to their deaths or they have walked off the cliffs which you don't see until the last second. It's not a place to wander about without paying attention. In 2005, we lost two tourists within weeks of each other at this site and in 2018 a woman accidentally walked off one of those hidden cliffs I mentioned. So, if you ever come out this way and visit Cape Spear...do be careful.THIS WEEK...I look at two Omnibuses from Marvel, One been Adventure into Fear and the other, the Solomon Kane Omnibus. I also brought along volume 5 of the Marvel Masterworks edition of Marvel Team Up, Brubaker and Phillip's Pulp from Image and the Winter of the Cartoonist from Fantagraphics.MEANWHILE, of course, check out this week's episode of the Thursday Comics Giant Size edition on the Top 10 Marvel Bronze Age Omnibuses!!!#solomankane #comicbooks #graphicnovels #robertehoward #morbiusthevampire #manthing #marvelcomics #pulp #imagecomics #fantagraphicsLots of love and happy reading, pals!!! OCEAN, SEX and COMIX In the Library of Graphic Literature WOW!!!! A very, very sunny day and of course, it was off to the Atlantic Ocean to shoot this week's episode!!! The 149thepisode of In the Library of Graphic Literature!!! As I expected, because I was on a narrow part of the trail, I was interrupted by hikers throughout the taping but it was kinda cool to get a feeling for the amount of people on this, one of the more deadly trails around the City of St. John's....The location today is on the trail around Signal Hill where Marconi sent the first wireless message and began the age of modern telecommunications. The trail wraps around the cliffs and eventually make it all the way up to historic Cabot Tower. A wonderful walk but one not to be taken lightly. THIS WEEK...I bring you a little look at a few of the legendary Curtis Magazines from Marvel Comics. I run through a bit of history on the line and show off a few of the magazines from Dracula Lives to the Savage Sword of Conan.MEANWHILE, of course, check out this week's episode of the Thursday Comics podcast on SPOTIFY and iTunes as we go weekly. EISNER AWARDS 2020 and SUMMER STREET FUN In the Library of Graphic Literature The sunny was out in all it's glory and so I made my way down to the oldest business street in North America, Water Street to read out the 2020 Eisner Award Winners and peruse three new books! This summer, the street has been turned into a pedestrian Mall due in part to a petition I started a couple of months ago.

CONAN and HULK SEXIn the Library of Graphic LiteratureYep. DC is still screwing everyone over with late books and 2nd rate service. Get it together, DC. Maybe you need to fire your publisher and give me their job....THIS WEEK...we have two cool little books of cartoons including Harper Perrenial's Everything is an Emergency by Jason Adam Katzenstein and from IDW, David Coverly's collection of cartoons entitled Speed Bump. Good to stretch your reading sometimes.AND at last, volume 2 of the Immortal Hulk is out this week which I'm just dying to read and from Fantagraphics, I have Perramus by Alberto Breccia & Juan Sasturain. FIELD TRIP!!! In the Library of Graphic LiteratureIt was such a nice day, I decided on another Field Trip edition!!! This time to the steps of the Basilica of St. John the Baptist here in St. John's. At the time of it's construction in 1839, it was the largest church building in North America and today, is the 2ndlargest in Canada after St. Joesph's Oratory in Montreal. ...St. John's is the oldest settlement in North America dating from 1497 and through the Narrows you can see the North Atlantic. About 7.5 miles from downtown St. John's is Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. In the video, I say 12 miles but it's actually 12 kilometres. My bad. Oh, and my condolences to the Sinnott Family on the passing of one of comicdom's premiere inkers of Jack Kirby, Joltin' Joe Sinnott!!! There's a true master of the brush. He will be missed.THIS WEEK...I got in four cool books. First of course, is volume 2 of Zander Cannon's masterpiece, Kaijumax. One of my favourite new series of the 21stCentury and if you haven't read it yet, run out and pick up a copy of this and of volume 1. Wildly imaginative and brilliantly written with an art style that fits it like a glove from Godzilla. I could go on and on...but just go out and BUY IT!!!!We have two entries from dirty old DC Comics this week in the form of Legends of the Dark Knight: Matt Wagner, which is a must have for any Bat maniac or fan of Mr. Wagner. We also get volume 2 and a cool slipcase for Doomsday Clock, which I'm still in the middle of reading, so no spoilers!!!AND we end off with the beautiful Morbius the Living Vampire Omnibus from mighty Marvel. I always liked Morbus and had a lot of the comics in this volume!!! I can't wait to crack this baby open!!! As for which is my favourite...it's tie between tall of them.CATCH next week's episode of the Thursday Comics podcast on SPOTIFY and iTunes.#blacklivesmatter #Morbius #spiderman #batman #kaijumax #doomsdayclock #gilkand #vampires Lots of love and happy reading, pals!!! the PLAGUE STORIES: The Story of Wu Lien-teh...PLAGUE FIGHTER! In late 1910, a mysterious and lethal illness swept through a city on the Russian-Chinese border and then began to move down the Manchurian rail lines, killing 99.9% of it's victims.... The Chinese rulers sent Dr. Wu Lien-teh to investigate and he made his way to Harbin where one of the first things he did was order an autopsy of a recent victim. He learned to his surprise that he was dealing with Pneumonic plague, the same disease that swept through Europe in the 14th Century. Some disputed his claims including a French doctor by the name of Girard Mesny. Mesny had had experience in India with the Bubonic Plague and thought that an Asian doctor just didn't have the qualifications to correctly diagnose the plague in question. Obviously a bit of a Smartypants. Wu warned Mesny that this disease may be spread by droplets in the air as opposed to flea bites and recommended that he should wear a mask when treating the patients. Mesny ignored the advice and within a couple of weeks, contracted and then died from the Pneumonic plague. Wu ended up getting the Russians and Chinese to agree to close the railroads and it was due to this, that it didn't spread to the rest of China and beyond, especially during the Chinese New Years holiday. He stopped it in it's tracks. No pun intended. Wu went on to battle the 1919 Malaria Epidemic in China and another round of the plague in 1921. He set up a national quarantine system for China and eventually moved back to Malaya to retire in 1937. He passed away in his hometown of Penang in 1960. One person CAN make a difference. Stay safe...stay put. Think about Wu.
