The City of Peterborough has issued the following media release: To help protect the health and safety of people in the community during the COVID-19 pandemic,... the City of Peterborough is suspending operations of several municipal programs and facilities for three weeks as well as postponing non-essential public meetings. Facilities including the Peterborough Sport and Wellness Centre, the Peterborough Museum and Archives, the Peterborough Public Library, the Art Gallery of Peterborough, and community arenas will be closed during this period. All events and programs in these facilities, including March Break camps, will be affected by this closure. With the closure of all Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board schools, the City-operated child care services at those facilities will also be closed for the three-week period. The closure affects the before-and-after-school programs at Edmison Heights Public School and Westmount Public School as well as the full-day program at Pearson/PCVS. Peterborough Day Care Centre remains open at this time based on the advice of health officials. The health and safety of residents is the top priority, Mayor Diane Therrien said. While we haven’t had a local case of COVID-19 yet, this action is necessary as a preventative measure to protect the health and safety of our community. I know it is an inconvenience but it’s the smart thing to do. The City has implemented enhanced cleaning for services that are continuing with normal operations, such as Peterborough Transit, and City facilities that are remaining open. As a way to prevent the spread of illness, the City encourages the use of online and telephone services, when possible, and asks residents to follow the social-distancing recommendations of public health officials. For City online services, please visit peterborough.ca. For residents visiting municipal facilities that will remain open during this period, there will be social-distancing measures implemented, based on the specifics of each facility, to try to reduce the spread of illness. People are encouraged to follow the recommendations of Peterborough Public Health on interacting with other people and practicing safe handwashing and hygiene. The City is restricting non-essential, work-related travel of City employees and taking other internal measures with its workforce as part of its COVID-19 response actions. The City is continuing to communicate with public health officials to monitor and assess the evolving situation related to COVID-19. Actions related COVID-19 may change as the situation evolves. For health-related questions, people are encouraged to contact Peterborough Public Health or visit the agency’s website at www.peterboroughpublichealth.ca.

ALL PUBLICLY FUNDED SCHOOLS IN THE PROVINCE OF ONTARIO WILL BE CLOSED FOR MINIMUM 2 WEEKS FOLLOWING MARCH BREAK! Today Premier Doug Ford, Christine Elliott, Dep...uty Premier and Minister of Health and Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, issued the following statement in response to the impact of COVID-19 on publicly funded schools as March Break approaches: "The health and well-being of Ontarians is our government's number one priority. Since we first learned of COVID-19 as an emerging public health issue, Ontario has been diligently monitoring the developing situation to protect the health and well-being of all Ontarians. We have also taken decisive action to ensure the province's health care system is positioned to be ready for any scenario. Given the latest developments both internationally and here at home, today we are taking further action. Based on advice from Dr. David Williams, Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health and the experts at the COVID-19 Command Table, the Minister of Education has issued a Ministerial Order to close all publicly funded schools in Ontario for two weeks following March break, in response to the emergence in Ontario of COVID-19. This order was approved by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. This means that Ontario schools have been ordered to remain closed from March 14 through to April 5, 2020. We recognize the significant impact this decision will have on families, students, schools, as well as the broader community, but this precaution is necessary to keep people safe. Today's steps build on a number of actions our government has taken in recent days to respond to COVID-19, including moving forward with additional public health measures, which include enhanced access to screening, expanding lab-testing capacity, and implementing new initiatives to keep the public and frontline workers safe. We are further setting aside up to $100 million in contingency funding in the upcoming 2020 budget to address challenges related to COVID-19. We are further mindful of those who work in other public institutions and buildings. As this situation evolves, Ontario's COVID-19 Command Table is prepared to respond quickly and effectively to any scenario and provide the government with advice on measures to keep the public and frontline workers safe. We are committed to working with partners to keep students safe and we expect to provide further information in the near future. Our public health system has demonstrated remarkable responsiveness to COVID-19 and these measures we are putting in place will ensure that we continue to contain the spread of COVID-19 in Ontario and thereby protect children and families across the province.
