FROM: Sudbury Shared Harvest Hi all, I hope all of you are managing the changes in your lives as best you can. ... Sudbury Shared Harvest and the Sudbury Community Garden Network have been discussing ways we can adapt to the province-wide ban on use of community gardens and also the closure of schools, which both impact our spring/summer plans in major ways. The Ontario government ordered the closures as part of the province’s state of emergency that was extended for another 28 days as of yesterday. Here’s what we’re doing: We have joined other groups across the province in urging the government to identify community gardens as essential food production, rather than grouping them in with recreational parks usage. Many people depend on community gardens for some of their produce through the season and the need to grow local food could not be more urgent with the economic situation as it is. A provincial organization called Sustain Ontario has written an open letter to the Premier which we would encourage you to read and sign. You can find it here: sustainontario.com//community-gardens-essential-food-serv/ In the meantime, we're shifting gears to encourage people of all ages and abilities to cultivate their neighbourhood by growing food any way you can - in their own yard, balcony or even a window box. The Community Garden Network has a Youtube channel with videos by local gardeners and we’re hoping to add more in the near future. It can be found at: youtube.com/channel/UCAqSD5Wj115AFNsUsV_rtIg We’re also encouraging experienced gardeners will start seeds and, if possible, start extras to donate seedlings to others in the community. A donation of seeds has been made to the community and Season’s Pharmacy and Culinaria has kindly agreed to make these available at their location (815 Lorne St, Sudbury). We respect the need to stay home as much as possible during this time, so if you are in need of seeds, please only visit when making a trip for essentials. Season’s Pharmacy is adhering to strict physical distancing and other safety measures. Please have an idea of the seeds you would like to grow, and place your request via phone (705 222 2200) prior to pick up. Our websites and Facebook pages are a good place to keep up with any developments: Sudbury Shared Harvest sudburysharedharvest.ca facebook.com/sudburysharedharvest/ Sudbury Community Garden Network sudburycommunitygardens.ca facebook.com/sudburycommunitygardens/ Keep well everyone!
