Lilacs The island's lilacs are a whisper at a life well lived Glory... Lilacs take their time Nature has no exact clock The buds all look dead in April Do you remember what that feels like? Knarled up, and woody Seemingly an empty vessel The preconditions must be correct Establishing consent A lilac grove is impassible A human cannot easily traverse We must be granted access Children can make forts inside the mature trees For a tree is what this shrub becomes in time Stubborn The heartwood of a lilac is strong A difficult task to sink a nail through The wood is purple in places; great material for knife handles Prolific Once established, lilacs will send up new suckers from the spreading roots "I want more life" she says Even if the soil is shallow, the lilac will find a way It is good to be as the lilac Flowering The lilac flower is a rare gift A thing to be appreciated and cherished Her splendor is not a thing to be taken for granted Responding to touch The lilac will not bloom if she is cut back too heavily This is not a place for brutes She needs to be coaxed into her fullness A hand must prune with intention For she also requires stimulation; Tactical hardship to overcome If left unattended, she will only flower on the uppermost branches Too high to be observed Her full, fragrant potential lost to carelessness and neglect The perfume of a lilac is intoxicating She becomes the whole world if the silly human can hold a space of awareness Driving quickly past a lilac stand with the air conditioning on is an efficient way to travel A busy human may easily get to their destination "Didn't you notice how spectacular I am" she thinks A farmer takes a slow road home The tractor too ponderous to miss her full-becoming The appeal of home is strong The belly rumbles with thought of nourishment Yet a roadside moment is taken Steel-toed boots stand on front, steel bucket She is ready to show herself A lilac in her full, glorious potential Backlight by the setting sun She is translucent in places Her truth laid out in vulnerable strength Hold on Everything is going to be okay The lilacs are blooming #GrowStronger
