" The City of Toronto’s 2021 Budget process is now underway! NOW is our chance to shape the city's priorities moving forward! " " As of 2020, the Toronto Police Services remains the single largest expense item in Toronto’s budget. That means the largest portion of tax dollars are going to fund policing rather than meeting the direct needs of our communities. And we know that it is Black, Indigenous, racialized, disabled, homeless, queer and trans neighbours and community me...mbers who disproportionately bear the brunt of the systemic racism, ongoing surveillance, criminalization, and violence in policing. Taking the lead from Black Lives Matter Toronto’s 2020 public demands, we are calling on Toronto City Councillors to take immediate action to prioritize the safety and well-being of our neighbours and community members!" " JOIN US November 30 at NOON to demand that City Council defund the Toronto Police Service (TPS) by 50%, and redirect the funds towards vital community supports & services. REGISTER HERE: https://us02web.zoom.us//tZYkceysqj8pH9EB7SbWYAi3JVWPkKFNo SPREAD THE WORD!"

We are overjoyed to announce that IPP client Tewkunzi Green was granted clemency and is coming home after 13 years in prison! In 2007, Tewkunzi’s abusive boyfri...end attacked her. While holding their 6-month-old child in her arm, Tewkunzi killed him in self-defense and to protect her baby. Medical records from the day of her arrest indicate that she had bruising on her neck from being strangled. But like many survivors who do not fit the perfect victim archetype, Tewkunzi was not believed. She was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to 34 years in prison. Yesterday, we learned that Governor Pritzker granted Tewkunzi a commutation to time served! We are so grateful to Governor Pritzker and to everyone who has supported Tewkunzi in this long fight for justice! Tewkunzi has been represented in her struggle for freedom by attorney Rachel White-Domain since 2014, with the support of dozens of activists, organizers, and anti-violence advocates in Illinois and across the country. We could not have done it without you! To directly support Tewkunzi and other recently released IPP clients to purchase items that they need for their successful reentry (for example, clients often need a bed, coat, and winter clothing), you can send Target Gift Cards in any amount to [email protected]. After joining IPP staff in June 2020, Rachel serves as the Director of IPP’s Women & Survivors Project. Through this project, IPP will continue to fight for the release of other survivors of domestic violence like Tewkunzi. To support IPP’s work, you can donate here: https://secure.givelively.org//re/illinois-prison-project Tewkunzi was previously represented by Rachel in her capacity as a private attorney (2014-2018) and then in her capacity as an Equal Justice Works Fellow, Sponsored by the Albert & Anne Mansfield Foundation, at Cabrini Green Legal Aid (2018-2020).

After several months of council-mandated Truth and Reconciliation-informed work conducted by dozens of diverse people from broad socio-political perspectives an...d across two professional volunteer committees, the recommendation to remove the JAM statue was clear. In the end, twelve all-white council members in a one-night virtual meeting overruled this recommendation in favour of their own opinion. If you ever wondered what failed governance, systemic injustice and institutionalized white supremacy looks like, now you know. See more

November 23rd is Polyamory Day. On that day in 2011, BC’s Supreme Court ruled that Canada’s so called anti-polygamy law does not apply to unformalized polyamo...rous households clarifying that polyamory, as it is typically practiced in Canada, is legal and not a criminal act. Prior to November, 23, 2011, it was questionable if polyamory was legal in Canada. Polyamory is the practice, desire, or acceptance of having more than one intimate relationship at a time with the knowledge and consent of everyone involved.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence starts this Wednesday. It’s more important than ever to question, call out, and speak up against acts of g...ender-based violence. The COVID-19 pandemic has reinforced the need to prevent and address gender-based violence, and one of the best ways to get involved is by wearing purple to show support for everyone impacted by GBV on November 25th. To find out more on this year’s campaign, and to learn more about getting involved, visit: http://ow.ly/DLtE50CscFn #16Days #GBV

"Clarke’s conclusion is that despite years of these reforms aimed at supporting and encouraging survivors in the legal system, few victims report their assaults, fewer still see their cases end in convictions and the vast majority who do report find their experiences in the system harmful and unjust."
