Wasaga Beach Lions Bingo Cancelled It is with great sorrow that the Wasaga Beach Lions Club has decided to cancel our Friday night bingo. It started on Aug 18th, 1964. Over the past 56 years, we have brought entertainment to many residents and guests in Wasaga Beach on their Friday nights and helped so many people, including the town of Wasaga Beach. Over these 56 years, we have donated over $2.5 million dollars. We bought the Towns’ first ambulance for $2,863.40. In 1969, we... built 16 bus shelters on the village bus routes. (we had local buses then) In 1971-72, we built the medical centre to house our first 2 doctors and 1 dentist. This is now our Youth Centre. In 1977, we donated $50,000 to get matching funds from Wintario to help purchase the arena. In 1987 we built a Playpark at Oxbow School, Now Worsley and we just replaced in 2019. In 1984, we donated $100,000 to build the Prime Time and Day care onto the Oakview Centre. And in 1987, we built the Lions Den ($79,000), which is now part of Prime Time. In 1993, we donated $25,000 toward our Town Library, but our biggest donation of all was $200,000 to the Town of Wasaga Beach so that we can have the RecPlex that we have today. We have been told, that without the $200,000 of public money from us, the other millions in grants would not have happened. Since 1988, our club has donated over $160,000 to G&M Hospital. Our club has also donated over $75,000 to RVH which serves our community especially for Cancer treatment centre. These are the major items in town that the public can see, but what you cannot see is the thousands of dollars where we have helped individuals where all other government and programs couldn’t help. We have assisted over 25 charities and organizations with over $50,000/year. Unfortunately, going forward without bingo, we will not be able to help as many charities, but we will endeavor to help all of our in-town organization. Covid 19 has been a hard hit for everyone, including our bingo. Unfortunately, our attendance has been declining for the past five years. The average attendance five years ago was about 180 people. This past fall and winter, it has been as low as 110, so the closing of our bingo was inevitable, Covid 19 made it instant. Until we see in the future that we could get an attendance of over 150, where we can raise funds for the public, we won’t be having bingo. We would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every bingo player that has come out to our Friday night bingo and have some Fun while helping others. We would also like to thank all of our Lions who give up every 4th Friday night so we could raise funds for our community. Every bingo player and every Lion know that a special thanks has to go to Lion Wayne Henderson. Lion Wayne started volunteering for bingo in 1982 and for most of these years, he has been there EVERY Friday night. So once again, we would like thank everyone for all of your support over the years. See more
