Phase 2 of the Renew PEI, Together plan will be implemented in May 22nd. Here is some great information as it relates to your dental care.

Public Service Announcement We hope everyone on PEI has been managing with their dental needs during these difficult times. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 p...andemic and the nature of dental treatment, dentists around the world have been very limited in what services we can safely provide to our patients. There has been a lot of uncertainty with the novel Sars CoV-2 and the health authorities and governing bodies have been trying to guide us all as best as they can. The government has released Renew PEI, Together, outlining guiding principles and phased approach to reopening businesses, services and public spaces. In it, phase 2 starts on May 22, and includes emergency dental treatment. Emergency dental treatment is the same procedures that are now in place at our two central emergency clinics. This includes only: dental trauma, pain or infection not controlled by medications, and uncontrolled bleeding. The main service that is provided at this point is tooth extraction. The only difference May 22 is that your dentist may be able to see you in their own office, rather than being referred to one of the two central clinics. It is now very difficult due to world shortages to get the proper protective equipment required to treat patients and every dentist may not have the proper supplies. As well, based on the number of emergencies to date handled by referrals, it may not make sense to open their office. Dental offices are like small hospitals with no government funding or assistance in getting any supplies. It will likely not be possible for all offices to open on May 22 for the limited number of patients who will require emergency care. In phase 3 starting June 12, emergency and urgent dental care will be permitted. At that time, with the increased number of permitted procedures, dentists will be able to provide more services and it may make sense to start re-opening their private offices. It has been very hard for us to only be able to help over the phone for the past few weeks, and hopefully all things will be back to normal and we can resume taking care of your oral health as we want to.

A Message to Our Patients from the Dental Association of PEI We know these are uncertain times for us all. We want you to know we are here to help alleviate all... your dental concerns. Yes, we are operating on an emergency only basis but we do want to hear from you should you have a dental question or issue. At present, the dentists of PEI are triaging all dental emergencies and only those experiencing trauma resulting in uncontrollable bleeding and extreme swelling and pain that can not be controlled with medication are being referred to one of two emergency dental clinics on PEI. For the most part, extractions are the only treatment offered at these clinics. The dentists of PEI are trying to do our part to limit the spread of the Covid 19 virus by eliminating the aerosols that could be created with the use of the high speed handpiece, i.e. drill. As well, we want to ensure you remain home unless absolutely necessary to venture out, thus we have cancelled all dental appointments. With all that being said, we want you to know we are here for you even if it requires facetiming or a phone call to discuss and help solve your dental issue. We really do want to hear from you! Dental offices on PEI have answering machines that are checked regularly and/or offer home phone numbers or email to contact your dentist. If you are new to the Island and do not yet have a dentist, any of our Island dentists will be happy to discuss your dental issue. If you have a dental issue, we do want to discuss it with you but we can offer some helpful tips: If you have an appliance for grinding your teeth, it is best to wear it in-order to prevent a broken tooth. If you find you are grinding and clenching your teeth more during this stressful time we have some helpful ideas to minimize jaw soreness: do not chew gum, eat a soft diet, use the magic bag or a hot water bottle to lay next to your jaw joint and brace your lower jaw if you yawn in-order to prevent over stretching the jaw. If you break a tooth and there is no discomfort other than a sharp edge, you can place orthodontic wax (which can be purchased at a drug store) or sugar-free chewing gum over the sharp edge. Remember to keep the tooth clean with brushing and flossing and chew on the other side. If you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, limit anything too hot or too cold near the tooth. You can try brushing with Sensodyne or a similar toothpaste for sensitive teeth. You can take some of the toothpaste on your finger and rub it on the affected tooth, making sure to rub it along the root of the tooth next to the gumline. Following the brushing or applying of the sensitive teeth toothpaste, do not rinse your mouth for 30 minutes as this will decrease the contact time of the toothpaste with your tooth. I know with Covid 19 our routines are not the same but please continue to brush three times a day and floss at least once per day. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your dentist. It is important that we keep dental emergencies out of the Emergency Room at your local hospital. Stay safe and remember that this is a temporary bump in the road. Staying apart now will have us together sooner. Take care and please reach out to us if you need us!

The dentists of PEI are trying very hard to be available to treat their patients during this time. There are very restrictive guidelines to protect their health... and that of their staff as dental treatment is one of the most risky to perform. The equipment and procedures in your mouth generate a mist that is highly infective so special personal protective equipment is needed when performing any treatment. SO - your dentist will have to ask multiple questions prior to seeing you to determine the risk category you may be in. For some cases, your dental provider may not be able to see you in his office. In 98% of cases they will try and keep you comfortable with drugs. Be aware that a roughness on a tooth or a loose filling or cap does not qualify as a true emergency. You will have to be in a very painful situation that simply can not wait or else it will cause more problems. Please try to adjust to your situation and unless you are simply beside yourself = treatment may be delayed for quite some time. Hopefully we will all come out of this on the other end much less worse for wear.
