"What's that?" Let us explain! The vestibular system is the sensory system that is responsible for providing our brain with vital information about motion, head position, and spatial orientation. It also is involved with motor functions that allow us to keep our balance, st...abilize our head and body during movement, and maintain posture. Do you know why we encourage little ones to chase toys in classes? As much as it is about grasping and stretching, it’s all about coordination and crossing the body’s mid-line! The body’s mid-line is an imaginary line down the center of the body that divides the body into left and right. Reaching across the body’s mid-line allows children to cross over their body to perform a task on the opposite side of their body. ... Super useful in everyday situations that we take for granted but might be challenging for little ones. Here are two examples! 1. Being able to draw a horizontal line across a page without having to switch hands in the middle. 2. Crouching down to pick up an object on either side of their body without having to turn around to use their dominant hand. The better your little one's coordination becomes, the more competent they can become at grasping, reaching, handwriting, core stability, spacial awareness... the list is endless!
