We already knew that regular exercise could lower our risk of developing lifestyle diseases such as cancer, and now researchers have started to uncover exactly how that works. Fennel is a refreshing, crunchy, anise-flavoured herb with feathery leaves. The seeds are used in cuisines around the world, and the bulbous stalks can be treated like a vegetable and sliced thinly into salads, or braised as a side dish. The most widely celebrated attribute of fennel is its ability to soothe the stomach and relieve digestive gas. In fact, fennel tea is used by nursing mothers to relieve colic in newborn babies!

Do you suffer from awkward, painful, or inconvenient gassiness? Here are some tips to help relieve it: 1 - Relax while you eat, which will encourage your body to "rest and digest", producing the digestive enzymes you need to properly break down your food. 2 - Drink plenty of water in between meals (but not while you eat, as that may dilute important digestive juices)... 3 - Eat plenty of fibre from vegetables, fruit, seeds, and whole grains. The added bulk helps sweep the gut clean and keep things moving. 4 - Consume probiotic foods such as kimchi, kefir, miso, and natural yoghurt to help keep bad bacteria under control. 5 - Stay away from refined sugar, fried foods and processed foods that include additives, fructose, or artificial sweeteners that can irritate the gut. 6 - Keep a food and symptom diary so that you can start to identify trends and pinpoint the foods that are causing your symptoms.
