Millstone Dressing Yesterday's mystery artefact was a thrift (wooden handle) with a mill bill, used to dress or resurface a millstone. When in regular use, millstones would need to be dressed, that is, re-cut, periodically to keep their cutting surfaces sharp. Mills were a large part of pioneer life in and around Flamborough. Grist mills processed farmed grain into flour - an essential part of a pioneer diet. Settlements developed around sources of water that could power mill...s, including Bullock's Corners, Crook's Hollow, Freelton, Progreston, Rock Chapel, Troy, Valens, and Waterdown. Check out the comments section for a video further explaining millstone dressing. More mystery artefacts to be shared in the future!
