A unique way to recognize heritage through something other than buildings - to date over 100 trees have been recognized. Launched in 2009 in partnership with the Ontario Urban Forest Council, the program brings awareness to the social, cultural, historical and ecological value of trees. The tree in this article is located in Morrisburg, Ontario. Lots more information through the link!

Millstone Dressing Yesterday's mystery artefact was a thrift (wooden handle) with a mill bill, used to dress or resurface a millstone. When in regular use, millstones would need to be dressed, that is, re-cut, periodically to keep their cutting surfaces sharp. Mills were a large part of pioneer life in and around Flamborough. Grist mills processed farmed grain into flour - an essential part of a pioneer diet. Settlements developed around sources of water that could power mill...s, including Bullock's Corners, Crook's Hollow, Freelton, Progreston, Rock Chapel, Troy, Valens, and Waterdown. Check out the comments section for a video further explaining millstone dressing. More mystery artefacts to be shared in the future!
Waterdown's Smokey Hollow was once the home of several mills. Virtually nothing exists of the thriving buildings that once stood there. The Arva Flour Mill of Middlesex County, Ontario, will give you a preview into the life of a flour mill. ... Let your imagination wander back to the 1860’s of Smokey Hollow. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0FF3Ypp7OOU
So many artefacts from the past are unfamiliar to us in the modern day. Any guesses as to what this tool is and what it was used for? Hint - it's related to the industry dependent on the flow of water
