Petun Dam Removal! We are pleased to announce that the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) has started the Petun Dam removal project! This earthen dam at the top of the Niagara Escarpment raises the water temperature of Collingwoods Black Ash Creek by almost 5 degreesbad for fish habitat and algae growth. Thanks to funding from the Greenbelt Foundation, Bruce Power and other donors, the NVCA will be upgrading this important cold water trout and salmon creek for us and for future generations. Northern Shoveler Duck-Skimming the Surface for Supper This Northern Shoveler Duck was recently found skimming the surface of the Collingwood Harbour. The bill of the Northern Shoveler is big (about 2.5 inches long) and shaped like a shovel. Their odd-shaped bill has about 110 fine projections (called lamellae) along the edges that act like a colander, filtering out tiny crustaceans, seeds, and aquatic invertebrates from the water. A Pileated Woodpecker Calls Collingwood Home A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers require a home territory of more than 40 ha of mature forest to settle so they are not encountered with much frequency. The largest woodpecker in North America, this big dashing bird with a red crest seemed to be quite at home in the wooded area of the Habourview Park trail. May 1st brings Mayflowers! One of the most beautiful signs of spring is the Mayflower. It is most commonly found in rocky pastures, barren lands and grassy areas where the soil is acidic and well drained. These ones were found on the Kolopore Uplands Trails in The Blue Mountains. The return of birds to Ontario after a long Winter signals warmer weather & better days ahead. One of the more interesting are Turkey Vultures which return each Spring from their winter homes in the Southern U.S. and Central America. Turkey Vultures are large, dark birds with sharply hooked beaks and a wingspan of up to 6 feet. They roost in trees at night coming in for a landing in the late afternoon after a day of soaring in the thermal updrafts of the Niagara Escarpment. ...
