Canada has two National War Memorials: One in the Nation’s capital, Ottawa, and one right here in NL. The National War Memorial in Ottawa, also known as The Response, was first unveiled in 1939 to commemorate the response of Canadians in the First World War of 1914-1918. The Dominion of Newfoundland and Labrador raised its own regiment during World War I and was not part of Canada at the end of the war. Our National War Memorial in Downtown St. John's was formally unveiled... on July 1, 1924. Today, both memorials symbolize the sacrifice of all Canadians who have served Canada in time of war.
