The Blenheim Blades made a big splash with the signing of Evan Wells, a 19-year-old forward who played with the Chatham Maroons the last two seasons. Wells, a 5...'8, 155-pound Chatham native, had 18 goals, eight assists and 166 penalty minutes in 47 games with the Maroons last season after getting three goals and six assists with 43 PIM in 39 games as a rookie in '18-19. Wells had two goals and three assists in 12 playoff games over his two seasons in Chatham. Wells played with the Windsor Spitfires Major Midget 'AAA' club in '17-18 (27 goals, 32 assists in 44 games) and the Chatham-Kent Cyclones Minor Midget 'AAA's in '16-17 (nine goals, six assists in 36 games played. The Blades are excited to add Evan to our roster, he's a game-changer with speed and skill, Blades' GM Bob Price said of Wells. Wells is the 18th player to sign with the Blades 17 skaters and returning goalie Caleb Pinsonneault. The Blades still have to sign a second goalie and have room for six more skaters as teams will have 25-man rosters this season but no AP players. The Blades have been on the ice since late August doing skill practices once a week and are expanding to ice-times at The Rec Centre as well as setting up an exhibition schedule with the Wheatley Sharks to prepare for the tentative Dec. 1 start of the 2020-21 PJHL Stobbs Division season. The Maroons, meanwhile, have not been on the ice yet this fall, with their GOJHL season also proposed to start Dec. 1. But what happened to all the food from May 16? I will never forget where I was when I got the call about the amount of food CK had collected during the May 16 M...iracle. I was on the couch recovering from a nasty bout of strep throat my husband was jokingly referring to it as stress throat. It was a great honour helping to organize the May 16 Miracle but as soon as it was over my body told me it was time to rest. I was feeling pretty crummy but when the call came in that we raised a world record amount of food I perked right up. We did it! I thought. Almost 700,000 lbs of non-perishables is a jaw dropping amount of food. I’m a figure skater and over the years I’ve spent a lot of time on the ice at Thames Campus arena. Nothing can prepare you to walk into an arena and see over 300,000 lbs of food in that building (approx. what was collected in just Chatham). We knew the need was great that’s why such a huge undertaking was executed in the first place. Over 40 organizations in CK received food because of the tens of thousands of donations we received from the residents of Chatham-Kent that day. And it was amazing. But the food banks, soup kitchens, pantries and hot meal organizations were already strapped the food deliveries from the many Miracle volunteers came in, filled the shelves and then mostly got used. I’m the primary grocery shopper in my household and therefore, I usually end up unloading the food into my house by myself. Every single time I’ve unloaded my groceries since May 16 I think about how heavy my grocery bags are. How my arms feel like they’ll give out under the weight of the 5 bags I’m trying to carry in 1 trip, and should definitely be doing in 2. I don’t have kids, that’s just how much food it takes week-in and week-out for my husband and I to eat. Hundreds of lbs a year. A family receiving one or two 50 or 60 lb. food hampers does not cure their food insecurity, but it certainly helps. The thought is that approx. 30,000 people in CK are in need this year. 700,000 lbs of food doesn’t last very long when you’re trying to find and feed those 30,000. The food came in and the food went out. It was distributed through organizations but almost more miraculously it was reaching the people who have never felt safe or comfortable using the traditional food backs. It was quite literally neighbours, helping neighbours. I heard dozens of incredible stories the weeks after May 16 about the way food was getting into the hands of CK’s more vulnerable for maybe the first time ever. One particular story that stuck with me happened in Chatham. A man was stopped for shoplifting food by a local police officer, in the moments after he was stopped the police officer learned this father was in such a desperate state he was taking the food to try and feed his children. The officer knew there was food and the right people in the room at Thames Campus to get him the items he needed; and the support he’d continue to need in the future from our amazing CK agencies. I also heard stories about how for the first time some of the smaller organizations were able to not ration what they gave to their clients. How during a worldwide emergency they could give the residents of Chatham-Kent enough to get them through a few weeks, instead of just a few days. How, the food insecure now had choices you don’t like peas? No problem! We’ve got carrots!. The food was shared with love across more than 40 agencies and dozens of towns, four-corners and neighbourhoods. So what happened to the food from May 16? Quite plainly, it was eaten by the people in CK who were hungry. Months later the pandemic still rages on, small businesses are still suffering, unemployment is still at a high. The need for food is still great, the agencies are still working day in and day out to keep everyone fed and we still need to continue to provide for them. Please remember the 30,000 people who need our support, not just on May 16 or on November 21 for that matter, but every single day.

Many top experts in holiday programs and social services are stating yours donation...s are reaching more people and making a historic impact. More details of impact and reach coming later, CK is focused on finding everyone for now. Toys and other gifts are still available but food is dwindling rapidly. There are so many on pace to have empty cupboards this holiday season. It’s up to us if we wish to do something. $70 million dollar lotto winner from Blenheim announced Adrian Olmstead of Blenheim was overcome with emotion upon discovering he was holding the one and only w...inning ticket for the $70 million LOTTO MAX jackpot from the Tuesday, April 14, 2020 draw. I went into the local grocery store, saw there was no one at the Ticket Checker and checked four tickets in my pocket, recounted the 44-year-old as he collected his life-changing windfall at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto. From the first three tickets I only had a Free Play but when I scanned the fourth ticket, I saw ‘Big Winner’ and thought I saw $70,000 flashing. I checked it a few more times and was stunned to realize it was $70 million! At that moment he abandoned his full shopping cart, quickly walked out of the store, got into his truck and started to weep. While in the grocery store parking lot, he phoned his mom, who heard him crying and was instantly worried. I told her, ‘These are tears of joy Mom because I just won $70 million with LOTTO MAX!’ I had to repeat myself a few times because she was in shock. But when reality sunk in, my mom, who never swears, yelled a few expletives! Still in his truck in the grocery store parking lot, Adrian spent quite a bit of time talking with his mom about this incredible fortune and what the future holds. She went into ‘mom mode’ and started giving me some advice about how to navigate this life-changing event. The stay-at-home father of two children said he took a bit of time before coming forward to claim the ticket because he wanted to ensure he had the best advice on how to handle the money and how it would impact his and his family’s lives. My priority is that we live a good life, but I want to raise my children to know the value of a dollar, understand the meaning of hard work and to teach them how to provide for themselves when they are adults. Adrian has plans to buy a new home with lots of land, so his children have plenty of room to play and will take care of his mother. But he does want to splurge on couple of toys for the family such as an RV, so that they can travel across Canada and wants to have new fishing boat in tow on those adventures. Adrian reluctantly admitted he also wants to purchase a fast car as a special treat for himself. The most important thing to me has always been to provide for my family. I can now do that in ways I never dreamed of before. This money can even ensure a good fortune for my future grandchildren. Since its launch in September 2009, Ontario LOTTO MAX players have won over $5.7 billion, including 77 jackpot wins and 612 MAXMILLIONS prizes, right across the province. So this happened. It began with a text to my mom asking, "You know that Miracle food drive that happened in Chatham-Kent, ON? Do you think it could happen in Mo...ntreal?" She said YES. And Montreal said YES. Montrealers went above and beyond today for our Miracle Du 13 Septembre. Never have I felt so fulfilled. Texts received today from volunteers across this city: "When I personally saw an old lady crying when she received donations from us, my heart was filled with a rare feeling of warmth." "People love it. It's the neighbours working together for a good cause that is not one persons which makes it so special!!" "We have a cargo van full of donations to drop off tomorrow, and another 90 boxes to distribute to organizations that didn't receive." From someone who donated food: "Volunteers just picked up at my door in St Henri in the pouring rain!!! And waved. Gave me goosebumps we can all come together for the greater good."
