Unfortunately the cost of not funding quick and accessible Psychotherapy has been high. When we don't provide prevent, we're forced to try and provide intervention later. #waystowellbeing #waystowellbeingtherapy https://www.cbc.ca//suicide-hotline-pandemic-covid-doherty

So true! In fact, ethically EMDR therapists need to take a developmental history (even for first responders with work related ptsd) in order to understand the context of the injury. Treating someone for PTSD without understanding their developmental milestones and family context growing up would be like showing up at a bad call with no dispatch and no information about the call. Talk about a silly idea! https://yaledailynews.com//attachment-style-can-mitigate-/

For Halloween I thought I'd list a few self-help tricks and some ways to treat yourself! Trick: keep a strong mint or halls in your pocket as a conditioned mindfulness when you feel intense emotions coming up. Over time the strong taste will become a conditioned calming response. Trick: find a small scented candle or essential oil smell that brings you joy. Smell it during times of stress as it'll naturally calm your body. Your sense of smell is the strongest memory trigger.... Treat: Make a nice facemask or have a cup of your favorite tea to naturally relax your skin and muscles. Treat yourself to an hour or two of quiet time or time to draw or sketch of colour mindlessly. You deserve to treat yourself! #waystowellbeing #waystowellbeingtherapy #therapistsofinstagram #therapy #psychotherapy #psychotherapistsofinstagram #healing #healingtrauma #recovery #recoveryispossible #notalone #ptsdsurvivor #ptsd #ptsdrecovery #ptsdwarrior #ptsdawareness #cptsdwarrior #cptsd #cptsdawareness #cptsdrecovery #cptsdsurvivor #trauma #traumarecovery #traumainformed #traumahealing #depressionhelp #anxiety

For well over a decade my dream has been to help people heal from traumatic and overwhelming experiences. In 2007 when I first began working at Sick Kids Hospital and volunteering at CAMH with people who had a diagnosed mental illness or had experienced a crisis, I began to realize there was a huge gap in the system. Person after person told me their story of trauma, their stories of pain and heartache that lead us to that moment. I began to see that I was taught about mental... illness but what people were actually experiencing was trauma. From that point on I worked the best trauma therapist jobs I could find and studied as much as I could. In 2013 I realized I needed to do more, I dreamed of a personalized approach to healing the trauma of the individual in front of me, not trying to fit them into a preset approach. I began my website www.waystowellbeing.ca and wrote articles and created videos so people could access tons of free resources and tips to heal. In 2018 I reached a critical point, I realized the systems I was working in were neither serving me, nor my clients. I began working exclusively for my organization Ways to Wellbeing and dedicating myself to my own vision and mission. In 2020 I, like all small organizations, was pushed to adapt again. Instead of being discouraged by the state of the world, I transitioned to online therapy and began two new projects. I figured if people can't come to me, I'll try to go to them. The @HealingTraumaDocumentary was born as a way to spread high quality information and inspiration around the world. Our aim is to release it by the end of 2022. I'm also working on creating an online course covering trauma essentials so people can do some of their own healing to compliment therapy. I am so thankful for family, friends, my clients, my therapy team, my consultation circle, my EMDR Canada coordinators group, the medical community, my allies and community members and my hubby for being with me on this journey. I truly could not do it without all of you! Happy Thanksgiving! I am so thankful, this year and every year.

It may seem overwhelming to think about changing the whole world, it's easier to think of it as small moments that create a ripple effect. Smiling at a stranger, leaving positive comments on people's social media, volunteering or sharing information about other people's community enhancing work and activities, be humble, get by on less, express gratitude for each little thing, do your own healing work, share the skills and tools you're learning with others, appreciate each act that others do that's positive to you. This is how the world is changed. #waystowellbeing #waystowellbeingtherapy #healingtraumadocumentary

We're heading towards winter, it's a pandemic, the world feels unfamiliar and there's a lot of uncertainty. It's ok to fall apart, it's ok to cry and feel fear. You are not along in this, we will survive this together as a community! #waystowellbeing #waystowellbeingtherapy

It's tricky to be part of a society that's so disconnected from ourselves and our experiences. By teaching people all about emotions we empower them to regulate and gain mastery over those emotions. By teaching people that thoughts aren't facts we help them gain self esteem and a sense of self. By employing impulses and urges they gain the skills to resist the urges and feel more secure

There are so many challenging things about mental illness, from pain to stigma to shame and fear, to financial barriers and lack of resources and government funding. If you could change one thing, what would you change?

I love when people heal their trauma because it has such an amazing ripple effect on others. Doing your own healing work is one of the ways the world is changed!

This year has been a gong show, the winter will be the hardest of many people's lives. The best way to tackle depression is with prevention and early intervention! For those with insurance or who can afford therapy: my team is going to try and be available as much as possible. For those who can't afford therapy: some areas have free or sliding scale services available @cmhanational @camhfoundation @kidshelpphone If you're feeling suicidal please go to your local emergency roo...m @cambridge_memorial_hospital @cmh_foundation @groveshospital @smghfoundation . You are not alone, we are all in this together. My website www.waystowellbeing.ca has a free narrated presentation on natural solutions for depression available. If you're prone to mania or have bipolar please consult your doctor before using any at home depression helping tools. Many people don't realize St. John's Wart (natural supplement) and the depression light can both trigger mania! #waystowellbeing #waystowellbeingtherapy

While watching a lecture by a civil rights activist I came upon this quote. It's undeniable the world is changing, it may feel dark and stormy and confusing. This year is painful and forcing us to change, I can't help but be curious about the other side though. I think there are lots of amazing and revolutionary changes that will happen. We can no longer be silent but now we need to come together and advocate for human rights, for mental health and trauma healing services. The world won't allow us to be silent and complacent any longer.
