Carving pumpkins this week? Opt out of the popular "bleach to preserve" method that is extremely harmful to the wildlife who consume them once tossed, and try using a safe alternative of one part vinegar to ten parts water to save your jack-o-lantern's face! Thanks to our friends at the Toronto Wildlife Centre for providing this important information and protecting our wildlife!

We support this message. At least until November 1st. Do you ever get "Halloween Eagles" at your feeders?

Have you seen the viral post making the rounds suggesting to use old cooking grease mixed with oats to feed the birds? We've had A LOT of questions about it lately! While this may seem like a cheap and easy substitute for suet, it has no nutritional value and is unattractive to birds, and should not be offered in any amount! Cooking grease (particularly from bacon) is full of additives and preservatives that can be harmful to birds, and oats have no nutritional benefit to... a bird's diet. Not only is it unhealthy, but this mixture is texturally unappealing to birds and is likely to attract other animals such as rats and raccoons. If you would like to make suet at home, we recommend using either Simply Suet or pure beef suet (can be bought from a butcher) as a base, and adding nutrient-rich ingredients like all natural peanut butter, chopped peanuts & tree nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and dried mealworms. And is that sounds like too much work, we have a wide variety of ready-to-eat suet that the birds love available in store and online: https://order.wbu.com/newmarket/bird-food/suet-mealworms See more

Each week in our group Ontario Birds by WBU Barrie and WBU Newmarket we host a themed photo contest! The theme is selected by our team, group members submit their photos, and the photo with the most likes at the end of the week is featured on the WBU Barrie & WBU Newmarket pages. This week's theme was Pumpkins & Wildlife, and this adorable chipmunk bum photo by Wendy Sherratt Hogan was chosen as the winner! Congratulations Wendy, and thanks for sharing your photos with us! Head over to the group to find out this week's theme and enter your photos for a chance to be featured!

There's a new seed character in town, and the birds can't get enough of it! Meet Blaze the Hot Pepper Squirrel Seed Character: perhaps the one squirrel you actually DO want on your feeders. This adorable fellow is made of some of your backyard birds' favourite foods such as sunflower chips, fruit, and white millet, and also includes hot pepper to help keep those cheeky squirrel visitors to a minimum. Find Blaze and his posse of other seed characters in store!
