Welland Centennial Drama

Over the course of two days, Welland Centennial students did the Walk for Wenjack as part of The Secret Path Week. Secret Path Week honours the legacies of Chanie Wenjack and Gord Downie. Doing the walk is our answer to Gord's call to "do something". We are educating our students and bringing more awareness to the history of residential schools and the generational trauma that has followed. As well, our junior drama classes have been creating tableau and shadow imagery perf...ormances about residential schools. They have been respectful of the subject matter as they made their creative performances. As a Legacy School, Centennial is committed to taking steps towards ReconcilACTION. Cougars making a difference!

Mr Ingrao performed the song SON from The Secret Path as part of a virtual show dedicated to Gord Downie. It was put on by the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre and donations made throughout the night benefitted the Downie Wenjack Fund. Mr Ingrao made Centennial and the Centennial Arts Dept proud and showed that the Arts matter and Arts Education matters. His commitment to educating our students about residential schools, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and Reconciliation is inspiring. (Video recorded by Mr M Krasnay.)

To all of our Centennial drama supporters, Today would have been the opening night of our musical Legally Blonde. Unfortunately that is not our reality because of the current global pandemic. We know that our students have worked extremely hard over the past 6 1/2 months and today will be a tough day for them. LEGALLY BLONDE UPDATE: We have received notice from the Ontario Ministry of Education that all Ontario schools will remain closed for the 2 weeks following March break. This means all Ontario schools will be closed March 16 until April 5, 2020. Schools are expected to reopen Monday, April 6. As the students and staff are truly dedicated to the musical, we intend to continue our rehearsals via Google Classroom over the two week mandatory shut down. ... Sunday rehearsal vibes! Thanks to the cast and crew for their hard work and commitment to this production. Lots of hours of prep, planning, tech, and rehearsal go into making the show and we have dedicated students and staff working to make it happen. Tickets go on sale in late March!!

Through our Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Arts and Culture program, we invited Sara Allison to do a Set Painting workshop with our students. Sara is a Centennial grad who went on to Sheridan College for the Theatre Production course and is now working in professional theatre. It was very exciting for our Arts students to learn about different set painting techniques and apply them to set pieces for Legally Blonde. A big thank you to Sara for sharing her knowledge and experience with the students.

Exams are done and the work continues on Legally Blonde. Our student stage management team, student & volunteer tech crew, and the staff directing team have been meeting this week to continue our planning for the musical. Rehearsals continue next week :D Lots of exciting things coming up!!
