Will definitely miss the walks we've had in Grey Owl especially in the Fall. (taken Sep 2014). Fall is in the air, jack Frost has done his job well. the fog layer just adds to the overall quiet and mystery. What is not to love during an early morning walk in Grey owl. Our local wildlife consists of a fox family and a few whitetail deer as well as quite a few different bird species..
The Hockey Player ... When my son was playing the game, he had many different coaches; Each contributed in their own way into making Bert the Coach he is today. One of Bert's favorite shows for the long bus rides was Slap Shot. This is my take on any one of the Hanson Brothers.
the ever-hardy dandelion ...mother nature designed this plant to spread far and wide. Once established the big job is the next generations; the flower stem, when flowering seems to have a mind of it's own, but once the flower is pollinated it rapidly gets to this stage and awaits a breeze, to travel the airways to a new home. Love it or hate it the dandelion is a survivor.
Mountain Man ...this is my idea of a mountain man; the people who lived by their wits in a new land searching for better furs, minerals farm land and easier routes to prosperity. Butternut and oil paints finished with liquid wax.
American Goldfinch changing plumage (taken Sep 2012 at Grey Owl); this bird is going through molt, where the feathers are replaced with new plumage, in the fall and winter colours to better blend in with their surroundings. A large percentage of these seed eaters stay here all winter.
Blackfoot Indian Mask ... This 1/3 size mask is created in Butternut, oil paint with gel varnish. When dry, sprayed with lacquer then covered with liquid wax. I really enjoy working with Butternut as the wood cuts cleanly with sharp tools and leaves a nice sheen without sanding. I have a fairly good selection of old photos of the various North American native tribes and many of their chiefs. I try to depict what they would be wearing for softer ceremonies.
Beautiful Autumn evening spent with friends at Poplar Ridge nine years ago.
Wayne's take on the Cormorant Top two Pictures.... Left one is the carving, Right one is the real thing
Missing our Virginia Creepers, especially at this time of the year.
Santa Head Ornament #03 normally made from Basswood or Poplar; these heads were done in two different sizes. the smaller lacked some of the detail found on the larger but both were designed to be hung from the tree.
Dragonfly on Cosmos Flower...
Iguana ... This was a request from a family member. My first attempt at a reptile of this type. base and iguana are one piece basswood, paint is acrylic and sealed with lacquer. Now resides in Alberta
Another Changing of the Colors .... taken four years ago along Moon Lake. I cannot resist snapping a photo of this type of relaxion. The autumn colours just add to the scene
I love my whiskey! ...This little guy was created to hold the sample bottle of liquor. carving is basswood, acrylic paint, oil base dark stain wash then clear lacquer finish. The booze is real. This happy little fellow now lives in Calgary, Alberta.
Changing of the Colors .... taken Sep 2012 in Grey Owl
Bottle Stopper... I have done many of these characters just to learn and practice. 30 years ago each one took around an hour to do without paint. The fun part was the different expressions and hats which seemed to evolve without thought. Basswood was used for most of these little heads and when painted it was acrylic paint then a stain wash coat then spray lacquer
Road Block (taken Jun 2016 within the Bison Enclosure)... this herd boss decided we were a threat to his harem so decided to block us so they could pass. NO PROBLEM; just a better opportunity for a few photos., 500mm Lens on Nikon.
Sioux Indian ... wood is butternut; oil paints then lacquer then wax; 1/2 size head Pronghorn antelope head dress.
Aug 31, 2016 from the dock at the bottom of the golf course. I hope the fisherman had his cell phone. He didn't have a bite the whole time I was there, he would have to phone for takeout.
Northern Saw-Whet Owl... Life size Saw-wet owl, basswood and acrylic paint. I enjoyed doing this fellow and plan on doing another one.
Taken Jun 29, 2016 Wild flowers near the Bison Enclosure/Lake Audy
