We are security guards. Even before the pandemic, we have always been frontline workers. We have always been first responders. We are there when there's an overdose, and we have to administer Narcan and start chest compressions before EMS or police arrive. Did you know sometimes they're already dead when we start?... We are there to stop the bleeds on stab wounds before EMS arrives. Did you know sometimes we have to finish our shift with blood on our uniform? We are there when your friend is unresponsive on the ground. We hear you screaming while we check her vitals and give First Aid, before EMS arrives. Did you know we hear those screams, for days, weeks, months afterwards? We are there when the teenager who's been struggling with life slits his wrists and tries to bleed out, before EMS arrives. Did you know we see those images in our nightmares? We are there when a knife is pulled on someone and we have to intervene, before police arrive. Did you know we think of our loved ones, wondering if we'll see them again after this call? We are there when he holds up a gun, crying for help because of his mental health. Did you know we still try to help, even if we are scared? We are there when she tries to hurt herself because she was released from the hospital too soon. Did you know that afterwards, we wonder about her every day, hoping she's okay? We are there when there's a fatality. Did you know we have flashbacks of finding that body? We are security guards. We arrive first. We are underpaid, we are understaffed. We work alone on sites. We are not always given PPE or proper equipment to do our job. But we show up everyday. We sweat, we bleed, and we work hard. We arrive first, and we are thought of last. Every job is important. Every job plays a role, in normal life and during a pandemic. But please tell us why security guards do not qualify as front line workers. Please tell us why our job is to maintain order, but we are not paid appropriately for it.
