Did you know that the active calcium absorption mechanisms are not fully mature in growing puppies until they are around 6 months of age? This means that prior to this age, 70% of the calcium that is absorbed from the diet enters the body through passive absorption in the small intestine. Since passive absorption cannot be down-regulated, the amount of calcium that is absorbed is directly proportional to its concentration in the diet. As a result, puppies are unable to pro...tect themselves from absorbing too much calcium when it is present in their diet. As the puppy ages, active absorption becomes tightly regulated through the actions of vitamin D3, parathyroid hormone, growth hormone and calcitonin. Although the absorption does become regulated, it is not soon enough to prevent abnormalities in the developing skeleton due to excess calcium. To prevent skeletal problems, dietary calcium levels should be monitored when feeding growing puppies, especially during their rapid growth period which occurs between 3 and 5 months of age. (Canine and Feline Nutrition, third edition, 2011). Contrary to popular belief it is NOT appropriate to feed a growing large or giant breed a commercially prepared adult diet. At first glance, the calcium and phosphorus levels may seem correct but the lower caloric content will need to be counter balanced by feeding MORE of the food, thus increasing the amount of calcium the dog is consuming. A much better approach is to feed a properly balanced raw diet (home prepared or commercial) or a good quality commercial kibble diet formulated for a large or giant breed puppy.
