Build a Dream 26.02.2021

Jessica Van Rooyen loves her job as an Electrician with the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers (CUSW) and joins us on our latest episode of to share her journey. In 2009, Jessica was laid off from her #manufacturing job. She'd been with the company for 10 years and expected to retire from there. Jessica noticed that while she wasn't sure what to do next, her co-workers with their skilled trades tickets found opportunities right away. "...It was a wake-up call regarding my skill level. I was really vulnerable." Jessica looked into programs for second careers, went to Lambton College for her Instrumentation & Control Engineering Technician diploma, and then approached CUSW for an apprenticeship. What are the steps for this #apprenticeship journey? Find a sponsor (like CUSW) & register with the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development Do 8,000 hours over 5 years Go to trade school in 3 full-time sessions over 5 years *This was Jessica's path. There are lots of variants to the path that are often determined by your previous experience and your sponsor's needs. "This is the best decision I could have made." ! https://www.buzzsprout.com//7899655-016-jessica-van-rooyen ’ . t.

A lot of students have asked what a typical day is like for women going into some of the careers that we highlight. We now start a lot of our interviews with this question. This month we spent some time interviewing Zoya Aboujaish, a 4th year uOttawa Electrical Engineering student. Zoya chose Systems Engineering as her specialization and is looking forward to working in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or hardware design after graduation.... "If you’re interested in the #engineering field and you really enjoy math, physics, and hands-on work then apply to the program that most interests you. Check the courses each program offers, and see if there’s something that really interests you." Why did Zoya choose engineering over other interests? What's school like?
