Son of a nutcracker! If you haven't heard yet, we've had to re-imagine the holidays at Tecumseh Mall, courtesy of 2020. Since Santa is safeguarding himself so t...hat he’ll be able to deliver all the presents on his big day, we will not be having the traditional Santa’s arrival and photos this year in order to keep everyone safe. WECYAC brings together the professionals required for an investigation to occur where children/youth can disclose their abuse #OnlyOnce. Historically, kids were interviewed in several locations, by multiple different professionals. WECYAC minimizes the number of times children must tell their story, reducing the trauma of disclosure. Kids should only have to tell their story once!

When a child discloses abuse, it means that they have identified you as a safe person to talk to. Remain calm. Listen to their story. Write down the information without seeking additional information from the child. Thank the child for sharing. Reassure the child that they will be kept safe. Report immediately.
#WECYAC aims to reduce retraumatization by providing a child-centred, safe space where children/youth can speak to the required professionals about the abuse they have endured.. #OnlyOnce!

Not all children tell someone right after they have been abused. Many children wait a long time before disclosing their abuse. It is important to let children know who their Safe Adults are who they can talk to. Young children: may not understand what happened to them was wrong, may not be able to communicate what happened, my feel they already told. School-aged children: may be fearful of getting someone they care about in trouble or getting in trouble themselves, may accidentally disclose. Youth: are more likely to disclose on purpose by talking about the abuse or by asking for help.
Section 125 of the Child, Youth & Family Services Act requires that every person who has reasonable grounds to suspect that a child is being harmed or is at-risk must immediately report the suspicion and information upon which it is based to the Windsor Essex Childrens Aid Society 519-252-1171.

We so-often teach our children about stranger danger; however, in most cases the offender is known to the child/youth. Even people we love and trust can hurt us or make us feel uncomfortable. As community members, we must remember that home is not always a safe place.
Keeping our kids safe and healthy during COVID-19 no doubt has been on parent/caregiver minds. Today, Rachel Plowman from RCC gives some advice on how to encourage our kids to follow important safety protocols. https://youtu.be/3zT0d6tdAyM

Grooming is a process where offenders prepare a child for abuse. Grooming involves building trust with the child and their caregiver to gain access to the child. It is important to let children know who their Safe Adults are who they can talk to if something makes them feel uncomfortable.
Child abuse is anything that endangers the development or safety of a child. This can be in the form of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, or exposure to family/domestic violence.
Child abuse is a taboo topic that we often do not want to acknowledge is capable of happening to our children. Understanding child abuse and its prevalence in our community helps us better recognize the signs, report concerns, and keep kids safe.
