Two years since Anthony Bourdain's death. Re-post, as I will every year. . I can't help thinking Bourdain would be on the right side of these current issues. H...e worked to bring people together over commonalities, was open to everything and everyone. . His life always resonated with me, and although we never met, I felt a kinship with him. As he traveled the world exploring new places, meeting new people, and absorbing local cuisine, I watched keenly. I wondered if something like that might be possible in the world of print. I could never say that his travels were the sole inspiration for The Itinerant Printer project, but they were one of the reasons that I thought it was possible. But it's more than that. . He was a New York punk rocker shaped by the Northeastern culture of blue-collar scholars, and he was doing what he could to find a precarious balance between living outside and living inside the system. That combination makes you hard, and even jaded, but it often, paradoxically, makes you open to anything and everything. In that way, I saw myself in him. . I share his cynical outlook; I share his unvarnished mode of speech; I share his love of telling a story even if it's a little sideways of the truth; I share his hatred of bigotry and oppression and institutionalized disadvantage; I share his love of people even though often I find it hard to express; and like him, I find it hard to be loved because it feels like a luxury in a world beset by tragedy. . In the end though, I love the world in a bald, burning, visceral way, one that overwhelms me at every moment like a wall of sound. The world is at once a hundred thousand flowers and a hundred thousand knives, a place that captivates me even as it cuts me to pieces. . When he spoke, he often seemed on the verge of tears, and I could never tell if it was out of sheer wonderment and joy, or out of abject despair, but I believe it may have been both in equal measure. . The world is too much, but I cannot stop wanting it. . I don't like Bukowski much, but this print I made years ago is the correct sentiment. Anthony Bourdain loved the world, and he let it kill him, and there's no shame in that. See more
