I can't believe that it's already that time of year again! Daylight Savings Time is upon us this Sunday March 10th, and it's now time to "Spring Ahead"! And while we look forward to longer days and warmer weather, this change also means a change in your child's sleep schedule and patterns. DON'T PANIC! Here are my tips on how to handle "springing forward" this weekend! My first recommendation is to leave your clocks alone Saturday night. It will feel much better for everyone ...if you wait until Sunday morning to change the time. So wake up on Sunday, have breakfast, and then go change the clocks. Once you've changed the clocks, the best way to help your child adjust to the time change is to "split the difference" between the old time and the new time. How does that work? When it comes to naps...on the first day of the time change, you would put your child down for their nap 30 minutes later than normal. So for example, if your child usually takes a morning nap at 9:30 a.m. you would push this nap 30 minutes later than normal to 10:00 a.m. (This will feel like 9:00 a.m. to your child.) Do the same for the afternoon nap and follow this schedule for the first 3 days following the time change. On the fourth day, move to the correct time on the clock again. When it comes to bedtime you will apply the same rule and split the difference. If for example your little one usually goes to bed at 7:00 p.m., you would adjust bedtime to 7:30 p.m. for the first 3 days following the time change. (This will feel like 6:30 p.m. to your child.) On the fourth night, move to the correct time on the clock again. This will mean that your child will be going to bed a little earlier or sooner than normal, and that it may take them a bit more time to fall asleep, but not so much that you have to worry about it causing damage to their schedule. If you have a wee one under 6 months of age who's bedtime is not predictable, it's easiest to simply jump to the new time Sunday night and give your baby a few days to adjust. It’s also important to keep in mind that it can take up to one week for your child’s body to adjust to the new sleep schedule. I hope that these tips will help your family to make a smooth transition during Daylight Savings Time!
