In Ontario, annual eye exams are covered by OHIP for children from 0-19 years of age. In addition, one free pair of glasses is provided if needed for children entering junior kindergarten through the Eye See, Eye Learn program! "Each year, thousands of children start school without ever having an eye exam. Parent often believe that their child will let them know that they cannot see well, but children are rarely able to tell that they have poor vision because they have noth...ing to compare it to. That's why we recommend that all children have their first eye exam at 6 months old, again at 2-3 years old, and every year after that. In Ontario, yearly eye exams for children are covered by OHIP until they turn 20 years old." "Undetected and untreated vision problems often cause reading difficulties, and can cause the same signs and symptoms that are commonly attributed to issues such as ADHD, dyslexia and speech problems." -information from the Ontario Association of Optometrists website

Occupational Therapy (OT) is a regulated health profession that utilizes assessment and intervention to address the needs of many individuals. Here at Wellington Kids, the OT engages children and adolescents in a variety of play activities to enhance their physical, sensory and motor skills. We provide a holistic approach to therapy by considering the person, the activities they engage or are interested in and their interaction with the environment. OT may help your child to... boost their fine motor skills in order to manipulate objects, develop the skills needed for handwriting or improve hand-eye coordination skills to improve aspects of play. The child may also be engaged in gross motor activities to strength core muscles, improve stability (i.e., endurance and strength), balance and awareness of their body in space. OTs may also assist children to learn or enhance the skills required to complete basic self-care tasks (i.e. bathing, feeding, getting dressed). OT could also assist in developing regulation strategies to remain in an optimal state for learning (i.e. calm, engaged and alert). Evaluating the need for specialized equipment may also be an area of focus if it is meaningful to the child’s functional concerns (e.g., assistive technology). The intervention plan utilizes the child’s strengths and is developed based on the needs of the child and their family. Let us engage your child in fun, play-based and functional activities to improve their skills today!

Expressive language is the ability to use words, sentences, gestures and writing to convey meaning and messages to others. Expressive language is important as it allows children to express their wants and needs, thoughts and ideas, as well as develop written language and engage in successful interactions with others. Some children have difficulties using language to express themselves to others. For example children with expressive language delays may have difficulties; * ...Labelling objects * Describing actions and events * Formulating sentences * Using correct grammar * Retelling a story * Answering questions * Writing SLPs can help! An assessment is completed to determine expressive language goals. Therapy is typically play based, where the SLP will target intervention goals with toys, books, crafts and more! In addition, therapy commonly involves engagement by the parents or primary caregivers to support the child by applying what they learn in therapy into their daily routine. We at Wellington Kids always encourage parents to read to their child. Daily reading can help build many expressive language skills such as - their vocabulary - their ability to re-tell a story and produce a narrative - their ability to answer questions - their ability to describe different actions and events - their ability to use appropriate grammar and syntax For more information you can visit : HANEN http://www.hanen.org//A/Promoting-Language-with-Books.aspx OSLA https://www.osla.on.ca/page/LanguageDelay SAC https://www.sac-oac.ca//reso/SAC-Milestones-TriFold_EN.pdf ASHA https://www.asha.org//disord/Preschool-Language-Disorders/ #speechandhearingmonth #slpeeps #slpsofinstagram #expressivelanguage #slpsfollowslps #slplife #slp2b #ashaigers #sac #speechandlanguage #speechies #speechielife #languagelearning #languagedevelopment #kids #toddlers #privatepractice #slpprivatepractice
