Like it has on many aspects of our society, COVID has impacted people who use opioids quite seriously. Recognizing these impacts on everyone is important as, collectively, we attempt to increase the wellness of all members of our community. {Alt text: Opioids and COVID: During April and May 2020, Toronto experiences its highest number of fatal suspected opioid poisoning calls each month to Toronto Paramedic Services since September 2017. There has also been an increase in the... number of non-fatal opioid poisoning calls in March and April 2020. Opioid use disorder can affect anyone, many people become affected because of over prescribed opioids by physicians. Stigma Surrounding Opioids: Stigma is like negative attitudes, judgements and stereotypes towards those who use opioids. It can create barriers to people seeking help which leads to a system of mistrurst and avoidance of services for marginalized populations. Language Matters! Instead of addicted or abuser, use substance use disorder. Instead of overdose, say opioid poisoning. Increased Opioid Usage During the Pandemic: Isolation and quarantine have caused an increase in opioid abuse due to negative effects on mental health such as: loneliness, anxiety, depression, fear, and income or work-related stress. Relapse due to the pandemic has been a common occurrence. If you are experiencing distress r struggling with your mental health, you can access resources such as: The Student Recovery Community ([email protected]), Counselling Services at Student Wellness (519-824-4120 ext. 52131). Some services have been moved to appointment only or contactless options. Even with the pandemic, help is still available! Teletherapy Options: Many healthcare providers are reachable through remote, virtual services. This digital format allows safe access from your own home. Virtual Group Sessions: staying in touch with peers and sharing your experiences will likely alleviate feelings of stress, fear, and anxiety! If you need more direct aid, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation centres are still open and operational. We share the the following sentiments as those from our colleagues in Student Experience, as written below. To the UofG community, with great sadness, grief and outrage, we offer our love, solidarity and support to the Black community and to all of the Black students, staff and faculty at the UofG. Black students at the UofG: We see you and are here to support you. You deserve respect, safety, and dignity. The Cultural Diversity Office is available to offer support and resou...rces to students struggling in response to the horrific and violent deaths of George Floyd, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, Breonna Taylor and the violence against Christian Cooper within a long history of anti-Black racist murders and oppression. To all the non-Black students, staff and faculty at the UofG: Lets examine our roles in upholding systems that are creating so much harm and death. Lets work to challenge racism and take action. Check in with your Black loved ones who are hurt and grieving; acknowledge their pain and commit to something you will do to take action. We are all responsible for creating change. We know that these injustices are traumatic and scary, and you dont need to be alone in the gravity of what you might be feeling. If you have questions or are looking for one-on-one support, please reach out to Tameera Mohamed, the Cultural Diversity Advisor, at [email protected].

The HPC doesnt want to leave you hanging! Our physical doors may be closed, but rest assured many of the HPCs practitioners have opened their virtual doors to ensure theyre still able to treat you during these uncertain times. Our Sports Medicine Doctors are still booking appointments through the HPC, and as a temporary measure, many of the other services we normally offer are available independently by our practitioners at their discretion as the HPC continues to investi...gate the virtual options that will allow us to serve you the best. Ready to learn more? Be sure to visit https://fal.cn/37MOx to learn how to book an appointment, and check back regularly as more information is updated, too! Once again, we thank you for your ongoing understanding and we hope to see you back at the clinic as soon as possible! #UofG #HealthAndPerformanceCentre #VirtualPhysio #VirtualChiro #VirtualSportsMedicine #VirtualNaturopathicMedicine #VirtualDietitian #VirtualPedorthics
