On rest and relaxation: Caring for yourself may not come easy for those who have experienced or are experiencing illness, trauma, anxiety and depression. Self-care looks different for every(body). That meditation and chapter of your favourite book, or the shower after a morning walk might not be what gives you the reset you’re looking for. That is okay. Empathize with your body. Be aware of your vulnerability. Look at yourself with compassion. Love and respect your body. Respect your own boundaries. Reclaim your space. Find space for your thoughts. Be aware of your pain. Re-set. Dream. Forgive. Love. Rest. Relax. Breathe. Just be.

Wellwood's WEEK-LONG virtual KICKING CANCER'S BUTT event starts in just 18 days! This year, you can do a lot more than walk, run or wheel. Looking for ideas or inspiration for how YOU can join in? We will be sharing some of the participant stories all along the way. Today, we start with the event bio for our very own Executive Director, Jane. "Running a charity right now (during a pandemic and financial crisis) ain't a job for the faint of heart. These are really, really ch...allenging times for our entire sector. I have been trying to put on a brave face, inspired by the REAL HEROES that we encounter every day at Wellwood. So, in their honour. I've created my own 777 Challenge. Over 7 days, I will dress up as 7 different superheroes, and tackle 7 different sports...all out in public. And will raise $7,000 doing it. You already know that this a great cause and Wellwood is continuing to do amazing work. Your donation will directly support people who are living with the unimaginable anxiety of having cancer in the midst of covid. As an added incentive, and to ensure maximum embarrassment, I promise to post photographic proof of my shenanigans on social media. You willing to pledge to see THAT?" Rumours swirl, but we are hearing buzz that she might just be rollerblading at Bayfront Park as Batman, cycling through suburbs as Mr. Incredible, paddleboarding on chilly Lake Huron as Aquaman, and hiking the Bruce Trail dressed as Superman. SEE? ANYTHING GOES! We invite you to be part of this epic fundraising event! Register FREE by clicking the event logo at www.wellwood.ca, decide on your activity plan for the week, upload a profile pic and your own story, create a team if you choose, then send out the link to collect donations from friends and family. Check back tomorrow for Greg's story! #wellwoodheroes #virtualwellwood #wellwood #walkrunwheel #kickingcancersbutt #hamont

Orange Shirt Day is recognized across Canada each year on September 30 to create awareness of the individual, family, and community intergenerational impacts of the residential school system, and to consistently and intentionally strive toward reconciliation. In honour of Orange Shirt Day, we chose today as the first day we’ve gathered together since March 16. Wellwood staff and volunteers stand in solidarity with our Indigenous community, past, present, and future. You may ...notice that under our masks, lie no smiles. We recognize the severity and importance of today and this never-ending commitment to learning and thoughtfulness. Our shirts were purchased from Woodland Cultural Centre (Brantford, Ont.) in support of their #SavetheEvidence campaign. As one of only a handful of residential school buildings left standing in Canada, the Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School is a physical reminder of the legacy of assimilation imposed upon Indigenous children in Canada. We encourage our community to follow Woodland to learn more about how they preserve and promote Indigenous history, art, language and culture. To learn more about Orange Shirt Day, and how others are organizing across Canada, please visit orangeshirtday.net. #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters #reconciliation #WoodlandCultureCentre #SavetheEvidence

We acknowledge the privilege in providing Wellwood’s safe gathering spaces on lands that Indigenous peoples have called home for thousands of years. The City of Hamilton is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant. We recognize that we must do more to learn about the rich history of this land so that we can better understand our roles as r...esidents, neighbours, partners and caretakers. Chedoke Hospital, formerly on the grounds of Wellwood’s community site, was an unwanted home to 1,274 Inuit (many of whom were children) during a traumatic forced relocation for tuberculosis treatment. This is a promise to never forget the harm that was done. #OrangeShirtDay #EveryChildMatters

The Oak Tree A mighty wind blew night and day, It stole the oak tree’s leaves away, Then snapped its boughs and pulled its bark,... Until the oak was tired and stark. But still the oak tree held its ground, While other trees fell all around. The weary wind gave up and spoke, How can you still be standing, Oak? The oak tree said, I know that you Can break each branch of mine in two, Carry every leaf away, Shake my limbs, and make me sway. But I have roots stretched in the earth, Growing stronger since my birth, You’ll never touch them, for you see, They are the deepest part of me. Until today, I wasn’t sure Of just how much I could endure, But now I’ve found, with thanks to you, I’m stronger than I ever knew. by Johnny Ray Ryder, Junior See more
