New Year brings a fresh start at many things. One important one to pay attention to is your insurance deductible. Insurance plans work in one of two ways: Contract year plan. This means your plan begins and ends on a date you initiated coverage, and can be anywhere throughout the year. For example, it could begin October 1st and end September 30th of the following year. Calendar year plan. These plans always begin on January 1st and end on December 31st.... Why does this matter? It matters because as of January 1st , if you’re on a calendar year insurance plan, your deductible will reset (go back to zero) and you will have to pay out of pocket for each prescription to reach your deductible until insurance will begin kicking in coverage for prescription coverage (including reducing your out of pocket expense down to the copay or coinsurance). The best way for you to find out what kind of plan you have is to call your insurance company (see the phone number on the back of your card), ask them when your insurance plan renews (contract or calendar year), and how much your deductible is (if you don’t already know). It’s good information to know for budget purposes. A friendly reminder from the Local Drugstore.

Migraines What you need to know Migraine is the 3rd most prevalent and 6th most disabling disease in the world. Its so much more than a bad headache!... Read on for a look at some steps to fight off or prevent migraine pain. Migraine is an extremely incapacitating collection of neurological symptoms. Everyone either knows someone who suffers from migraine or struggles with migraine themselves. Astonishingly, we still dont know what causes migraine. Its poorly understood, frequently undiagnosed, and woefully undertreated Consider Medication There are several over-the-counter migraine medications available in most pharmacies. Thats in addition to plenty of prescription options. Ask a trusted doctor or pharmacist which medications might be safe and effective for you. What cautions should you take? Do not take over-the-counter medications more than three times a week in order to avoid rebound headaches Find and avoid your migraine triggers Avoid stress by relaxing in a calm environment Establish a regular sleep pattern Improve Your Sleep Poor sleep can trigger migraines for some people. To boost your sleep quality, consider trying the following: Set regular sleep and wake times. Avoid overconsumption of caffeine and alcohol. Engage in relaxing activities like reading or bathing before bed. Dont take electronics or work to bed with you. Eat Well For some people, alcohol, caffeine, certain cheeses and chocolate can trigger migraines. Consider keeping a food journal to track which foods might trigger your headaches. In addition, try to eat at regular times and avoid skipping meals. Manage Your Stress While some stress is unavoidable, severe stress can influence migraines. Try to minimize your stress in any way you can. Take breaks, find time for activities you enjoy, try deep breathing techniques and simplify your daily routine. Find a Quiet Place Particularly when you feel a migraine coming on, its important to try to find or create a calm environment. Spend time in a dark room, and apply cold or hot compresses to your neck and head. Exercise Ask your health care provider what kinds of exercise are safe for you. Physical activity can help block pain signals, reduce anxiety and depression and promote a healthy weight. All of these effects can help you manage your migraine symptoms. Speak with Your Health Care Provider Dont hesitate to reach out to your pharmacist or doctor for help managing your headache or migraine pain. Your health care provider can recommend treatments that will be safe and effective for you. DISCLAIMER For information purposes only and is not considered individual patient advice. Here are countless reasons to quit smoking. And new data may add 12 more reasons to the list. A new study found that smoking caused almost half of the deaths from 12 cancers, including lung and liver cancer. The authors of this study used data on smoking prevalence and other health risks to see how many deaths could be attributed to cigarettes. Cigarette smoking continues to cause numerous deaths from multiple cancers despite half a century of decreasing prevalence, wrote t...he study authors, led by Rebecca L. Siegel, MPH, of the American Cancer Society in Atlanta. The percentage of people who smoke has fallen in the past decade, Siegel and team noted. However, about 18.1 percent of the population still smokes. Siegel and team studied 345,962 deaths from 12 types of cancer. The 12 cancers were colorectum; esophagus; kidney and renal pelvis; larynx; liver and bile duct; lung, bronchus and trachea; leukemia; oral cavity and pharynx; pancreas; stomach; bladder; and cervix. They found that for 167,805 of those deaths, or 48.5 percent, cigarettes were to blame. The danger of smoking was highlighted in particular with cancers of the lung, bronchus and trachea. Cigarettes appeared to be behind about 80 percent of those deaths. Larynx cancer also had a high percentage of smoking-related deaths, followed by oral, esophagus and urinary bladder cancer. Also, secondhand smoke is estimated to cause an additional 5 percent of lung cancer deaths, Siegel and team wrote. These researchers suggested that support for tobacco cessation programs and tobacco control may reduce smoking-related cancers. This study was published June 15 in JAMA Internal Medicine. IMMEDIATE BENEFITS OF QUITTING In the first 20 minutes after putting your cigarette out, your blood pressure and pulse will return to normal. Within the first day of quitting smoking cigarettes, your risk of heart attack will start to drop. After two weeks without smoking, your circulation will increase. LONG TERM BENEFITS OF QUITTING Within the first 9 months of quitting youll notice that you cough less and breathe better. A year after putting your cigarette out, your risk of smoking related heart disease and stroke is cut in half. By the time you reach your 5th year without smoking, your risk of a stroke is just the same as someone who hasnt smoked. And in 10 years, your risk of lung cancer drops significantly. 15 years after you make the decision to stop smoking cigarettes, you have almost the same risk of heart disease as that of a non-smoker. With all these health benefits, take your first step to unsmoking your life, not just for yourself but for your loved ones too. Ready to quit Congratulations on making the decision to quit! Now its time to make a plan, prepare for challenges and get support that will help you quit for good. If you need help quitting smoking, speak with your Pharmacist.

ADHD Facts Dispelling the Myths -CADDAC ADHD is the most prevalent childhood psychiatric disorder in Canada.... ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has been clinically observed for more than 200 years. . ADHD remains under-recognized and underdiagnosed even though it is the most treatable psychiatric disorder in Canada Overwhelming scientific evidence has lead all major medical associations and government health agencies to recognize ADHD as a real medical disorder. Children with ADHD are frequently labeled as problem children rather than children with a medical problem. ADHD conservatively occurs in 4% of adults and 5% of children worldwide. Scientific studies have shown that ADHD is highly heritable and is a chronic disorder that persists throughout the lifespan. Eighty percent of children maintain their diagnosis into adolescence and at least 60% remain impaired by symptoms in adulthood. There are three presentations of ADHD depending on which of the three core symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity) present: Predominately inattentive (previously referred to as ADD) Predominately hyperactive (very rare) Combined (most prevalent) All regulation of attention is impaired in ADHD. Over-focusing can be as much of an issue as inattention. Prioritizing attention and breaking and shifting attention can all be impaired. Executive functioning impairment and mood dysregulation also impact many children and adults with ADHD Parenting does not cause ADHD, although specialized parents can assist with symptom impairment Diets and limiting food additives and sugar will not cure ADHD Treatment for ADHD should always be multi-modal Children, adolescents and adults with untreated ADHD are at a greater risk for: Learning difficulties, less academic success, school dropout, and fewer years of schooling Additional mental health disorders and problems with self esteem. Substance abuse and a greater chance of becoming involved in the justice system. More accidents and sustaining injuries, more automobile accidents and earlier death. Current lack of knowledge, skills, and integrated services in health and education sectors post major challenges for accessing effective treatments.

Allergies - What You Need to Know No matter where you live, you and almost everyone you know have likely experienced allergies at some point. Continue reading for helpful information about seasonal peak allergens and how to minimize and treat summer allergy symptoms.... Allergens by Season Different seasons bring different allergens, meaning its important to realize which ones affect you most so you can be prepared. In the case of summer, weeds, grasses, pollen and mold are common allergy culprits. Ragweed is one of the most common summer allergens. The problem? Ragweed can actually travel for hundreds of miles via the wind, so it can be a problem in your area even if it doesnt grow where you live. Youll also need to look out for food allergies this summer. These allergens may include seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as melons, peaches and celery. Other allergens to be mindful of are insect stings. Potentially harmful insects include wasps and yellow jackets, among others. Millions of Canadians are allergic to insect stings, with some at risk of suffering life-threatening reactions. Although the reason why some people attract insects more than others is not completely clear, sweet perfumes and bright clothing may contribute to the problem. Symptoms Summer allergy symptoms will be the same as the allergy symptoms you may experience during spring. These symptoms may include the following: Runny nose Watery and itchy eyes Sneezing Summer Allergy Tips To decrease allergy symptoms in the summer, run your air conditioning with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter. This will help trap allergens, decreasing the number of allergens you are exposed to. Also, it may be a good idea to jump in the shower as soon as you get home to rinse the pollen off. Common allergy medications include the following: Antihistamines like Claritin (loratadine), Allegra (fexofenadine), Reactine (cetirizine) and Aerius (desloratadine) Decongestants like pseudoephedrine Combination products Corticosteroids, like Flonase (fluticasone) which include nasal sprays Not all medications are safe for everyone. Speak with your local pharmacist to see which of these medications is best for you. If you have any questions about managing your allergies, speak with your local pharmacist.

Teething PainWhat You Need to Know A babys first tooth begins to poke through the gums at about 6 months of age. The baby will continue to get teeth over a number of months until there are 20 teeth. About two-thirds of infants will experience some discomfort when teeth come in. What are the symptoms of teething?... When a baby is teething, you may notice any of these symptoms: Redness, swelling or tenderness in the gum at the spot where the tooth is coming in Irritable behaviour, restlessness, crying, not sleeping well Less hungry for solid food, more thirsty than usual Drooling, rubbing the gum Red rash on the face Symptoms of teething do not include: Fever (above 37.7C or 100F) Diarrhea Common cold symptoms Vomiting If your baby has any of these symptoms, do not assume they are caused by teething. See your doctor if necessary. What you can do to relieve the pain: Give the child a cool, safe object to chew on, such as a safe teether or a frozen face cloth. Make sure the object cant break into small pieces that could cause choking. Avoid liquid-filled teethers if the child already has 1 or more teeth. The teeth could puncture the teether and break off a small piece that could choke the child. Rub the gums gently with the back of a cool, small spoon or with a clean finger. Give a pain-relieving medicine such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen in the right dose for the child. Your pharmacist can help select a product and tell you how to use it. Do not give ASA (aspirin, acetylsalicylic acid) to a child. What you should not do for teething pain: Do not give the child teething biscuits. They may contain sugar, which is bad for the teeth and gums. Do not rub oral pain relievers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen directly on the gums. Do not use ORAL GELS that NUMB the gums, such as benzocaine. These products are not recommended by the Canadian Dental Association, as they may interfere with swallowing if the gel goes down the childs throat. They may rarely cause serious complications such as difficulty breathing, grey or bluish skin colour, headache, confusion, or weakness. If a blister develops where the tooth is coming in, do not try to break it. These little blisters are not dangerous and they almost always open and drain on their own. You may want to see your dentist if the blister does not go away or if it seems to be causing pain or interfering with feeding.
