As I was standing by the river today something profound came to my mind. As I looked to my right all the way upriver, I was straining to see the water in the distance as it flowed toward me. It seemed so far away and slow to reach where I was standing. It occurred to me that it was like the future. We seem to constantly look right, or off in the distance, and wish that what was coming would just get here NOW. In this moment I was painfully aware of my impatience with life’s j...ourney. I then looked to the left at the water as it rushed away from me around the bend disappearing from sight. This reminded me that there is no use hanging onto the past as once it’s gone, it’s done, and there is no changing it. The river straight across from where I stood was also rushing past, as life often does, but the water right in front of me was moving more slowly through the pools and eddies as if wanting more of my attention. The trickling nature of this water had me comparing it to the present, and how we too need to slow down and bring more of our awareness to the moment of time right in front of us. The future is coming, our goals and plans in place, but we can’t rush this process, nor know exactly what it will look like when it arrives. The past, though it has taught us much, is better left to flow around the corner and out of view.
