Happy Friday everyone! Did you know that flossing removes plaque and bacteria that you cannot reach with your toothbrush. If you don't floss, you are missing more than one-third of your tooth surface. Plaque is the main cause of gum disease. It is an invisible bacterial film that develops on your teeth every day. Within 24 to 36 hours, plaque hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which can only be removed by professional cleaning. Floss at least once a day, and plaque ...never gets the chance to harden into tartar. Getting into the habit of daily flossing is easier when you floss while doing something else like watching TV or listening to music, for example. Here's some important information on how to properly brush and floss according to the Canadian Dental Association. http://www.cdaadc.ca//cf/dental_care/flossing_brushing.asp

Fun fact: It’s never too soon to change your toothbrush - You want to make sure you change your toothbrush every couple of months and every time you have been sick. The viruses and bacteria that caused your illness could live on in your brush.

Did you know that the earliest iteration of modern dental floss was introduced in 1815, by a New Orleans dentist named Dr. Levi Spear Parmly. Dr. Parmly encouraged his patients to floss with a waxed silken thread after each visit. Waxed silken thread was readily available to consumers as tailoring thread. In 1819, Dr. Parmly wrote a dental book called A Practical Guide to the Management of Teeth, which encouraged people to brush twice per day, and floss once every day. If flossing has you intimidated, please feel free to ask Dr. Ready or your hygienist about flossing at your next cleaning and check-up. We can help you understand how to floss correctly in a way that works for you. As always, we’ll do everything we can to help you enjoy good lifelong dental health and hygiene.

It’s almost the start of a new school year, and your kids are getting set with new items, masks & school supplies. But don’t forget about oral health! Add these dental health tips to your back-to-school checklist: 1. Start the school year right with a dental cleaning and exam. 2. Swap out lunchbox no-no’s with healthy alternatives. Instead of chips or crackers, try nuts. Avoid candies and granola bars, offering crunchy snacks like celery sticks, baby carrots, and cubes of ch...eddar cheese. 3. Make brushing and flossing fun. To keep their mouths healthy, kids need to brush twice a day for two minutes at a time. They should also floss every day, preferably after dinner. We're always accepting new patients to our clinic. To book an appointment, call us today: (902) 564-6217.

Did you know that August 22nd is National Tooth Fairy Day? When compared to other magical visitors like Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy’s history is more elusive. Unlike most traditions that can be traced back hundreds of years, historians have had a hard time pinning her down. The Tooth Fairy has also been gracious enough to keep up with inflation! Prior to 1975, children were paid about 12-18 cents per tooth. Today, the average price of a baby tooth is $5....00. Do you have any fun tooth fairy traditions?

Have you experienced a sudden twinge or prolonged bout of tooth sensitivity? Cracked or fractured teeth, worn tooth enamel, and receding gums all expose the nerves and lead to sensitivity. Foods high in oxalic acids like spinach, bananas, and rhubarb help to plug up the tiny tubes where sensitivity and pain originates. Soft, bland foods like mashed potatoes, noodles and macaroni and cheese are also soothing and unlikely to irritate sensitive teeth. If you experience prolonged tooth sensitivity, you should have your teeth checked by Dr. Ready and our team to rule out any underlying causes like disease or decay. Make an appointment at our dental practice by calling us at (902) 564-6217.

Happy Saturday everyone! Due to vacation and camps, it can be hard to establish a consistent routine during the summer months. Taking care of your teeth may not be easy for you when you do not have a strict daily routine. Throughout summer, try to stick to the good habit of brushing and flossing. Do not worry if it gets irregular. Make brushing and flossing a part of your daily routine. You should consider a dental checkup for all the members of your family, and summer is th...e best time to do so. Before your child’s school starts, schedule the appointment. Figure out what time is convenient for you, and make the appointment accordingly so that your child can enjoy the summer. Enjoy your weekend

Once your child’s teeth begin erupting, you can begin cleaning them by wiping them with a moist washcloth. As your child gets more teeth, you can begin to use a soft child’s toothbrush. You should use just a pea-sized amount of toothpaste until your child is able to spit it out (too much fluoride can stain their teeth). For most toddlers, getting them to brush their teeth can be quite a challenge. It can be a good idea to create a "tooth brushing routine" and stick to the same routine each day! We're always happy to help you with any specific questions that you may have.

Some food for thought: Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, calcium-fortified tofu, leafy greens and almonds, are foods that may benefit tooth health thanks to their high amounts of calcium and other nutrients they provide. Protein-rich foods like meat, poultry, fish, milk and eggs are the best sources of phosphorus. Both of these minerals play a critical role in dental health, by protecting and rebuilding tooth enamel. Fruits & vegetables are good choices for a healthy smile since th...ey are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth. These foods also help stimulate saliva production, which washes harmful acids and food particles away from teeth and helps neutralize acid, protecting teeth from decay. Plus, many contain vitamin C (important for healthy gums and quick healing of wounds) and vitamin A (another key nutrient in building tooth enamel). We're always accepting new patients to our clinic. To book your next appointment with us, please call us at 902-564-6217. We look forward to connecting with you soon!
