Pancake Take Out Cancelled. Given the fact that we now have a confirmed case in the High School - and that directly or indirectly impacts many of us here at th...e Kirk - we are going to cancel the pancake take out announced on Sunday and think about what special event we could do a little later when.... God willing.... things seem a little safer. See more

Evening prayer, Feb. 8, 2021 Loving God, A sliver of moon hangs in the sky, and I remember my granddaughter ... reaching out with eager hands to capture it for her own, and I think of all we wish to possess, and sometimes cannot have. Help us to learn those boundaries, God, as to what belongs to all, and must therefore be cherished and cared for by all the fragile, beautiful planet, the air and earth, seas and land, creatures and kingdoms. Help us to see our commonalities rather than our differences, and to toil diligently to bestow a healthier home for future generations. We ask this in the light of the moon, and in the light of our faith that in these tasks we are not alone. Amen. Anne MacDermaid, Feb. 8, 2021.

Reminding you that today up to 8 p.m Atlantic Standard Time is your last chance to bid. Jane has just been on bidding and she'd be happy if she has to go on and raise her bids before it closes! This is a great cause and many of our St James people are part of this group or support it in one way or another.

Today is Remembrance Day. We will not be standing together at the Cenotaph today, but I hope our silent tributes will run through the day, breaking through our ...thoughts to bring us to gratitude and a pledge to honour and seek peace, wherever we are, however we can. My grandfather served in France, near the end of the First World War. He was never part of the active fighting, at least not with a gun. He worked in the trenches, installing "bath mats" to create a platform out of the mud. He never talked about guns. He talked about mud. Seeing the women in the fields, pulling the plough, through the terrible, terrible mud. He never talked about the guns, but he told a story about biscuits. Seeing a group of prisoners working by the roadside, one of the men in their group took a hard biscuit, and threw it. Telling the story 50 years later, Grandpa would shake his head. "I've often wondered if he killed that man. It hit him right in the head." Mud and biscuits: weapons of war? Indeed. Holy One, You who create by breaking darkness into dawn, You, whose smallest hope can break the hardest hearts with love, When we are worn down by the relentless violence of our world, Remind us of the power of even the tenderest green growing between rocks, And renew our confidence In the power of small acts of kindness, and your growing, relentlessly in us. As you remind us, this day, in small moments Breaking into our day, May we remember, the ones who gave their lives And youth, and innocence, For peace. Amen. See more

I know we're tired of the restrictions in place because of the COVID-19 epidemic. Truly, I get it. I'm missing the face-to-face connections with people outside ...of my household. I'm missing singing in community. I'm missing feeling the wind on my face when I walk outside. (Yes, even as someone who sports a pretty full beard, I'm used to that sensation, especially in the fall and winter.) I want to leave my mask in the house, and head to church, knowing that a group of us will be going to a restaurant for lunch, later. Or to take a trip to see my family, back in Ontario. But the SARS-COV-2 virus is a constant factory, one that doesn't take a break, even though we're tired of it. For folks living in areas where there haven't been cases, my hope is that your community will be spared. I hope you'll keep listening to the health authorities, and following their guidance - doing all you can to keep your community safe. For those of us living in areas where infections are on the rise, it becomes even more important that we listen to the directives and the guidance given to us by our health authorities. Let's not try to figure out how to skirt the rules. Let's live into the spirit, as well as the letter, of the law. As researchers move closer to a vaccine, we need to keep working to support our neighbours, and keep our medical system from being overwhelmed. Let's take care of one another. Washing hands. Maintaining minimum 2 meters physical distance. Wearing masks as directed. Following the guidance of the public health authorities in our area on how we can (and cannot) gather. Loving our neighbours as we love ourselves.
