Are you ready for the upcoming winter storm season? Your emergency kit should be different from your COVID-19 isolation kit. Remember, power outages can leave you without heat, light, the ability to cook food, and the means to keep food from spoiling. BC Hydro is encouraging you to create a kit which includes batteries, warm clothes and enough nourishing food to last at least 72 hours. Check out these great links for tips how to make your own safety plan and emergency kits. https://vancouver.ca//personal-family-emergency-safety.aspx https://www2.gov.bc.ca//build-an-emergency-kit-and-grab-an

Just a quick reminder our first Howl'een event is happening this Saturday, October 31st! Bring your kids and/or dog (or cat) and visit our tent in Nelson Park from 12:30-2:30pm. It’s an early trick or treat event for both kids and dog (cats). The first 100 kids in costume get a treat bag with candy, stickers, and an activity book. The first 100 dogs (and 50 cats) that perform a trick or arrive in costume get a treat bag with cookies inside and the owner gets a package of hand warmers! Share amongst your friends and neighbours to help make this event a success!

DYK.... Since November 1st, WECHCPC staff and volunteers interacted with 135 people through our office, spent 26 hours conducting safety patrols through the West End, Coal Harbour, and Stanley Park areas, provided support on scene to an assault victim, looked for a missing person, and worked with a health organization to assist a vulnerable member of our neighbourhood? In addition, our Neighbourhood Police Officers dealt with approximately 50 incidents in the last seven shifts. So what does this mean for you? This means we are working tirelessly to ensure our neighbourhoods feel safe for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. And we'd say - according to the Vancouver Police Department Perceptions of Crime Report respondents - we're doing a pretty good job at that!

A minor facelift with major impact at our office! In honour of our five-year partnership with Project 529 BC - and its five-year anniversary - we've switched the blinds for a sign in our front reception area. Thanks Cst Brunt for adopting us into the family waaaay back during the trial run in Spring 2015 and to the Vancouver Police Foundation for supporting such a great initiative! Also thanks to Shelley, our Programs Manager, for managing all our volunteers at Project 529 events. We've registered more than a thousand bikes at our office, through local initiatives, and at city-wide events!

Could you imagine starting your day and finding out your mode of transportation is gone??! Well that is what happened to Marc. Marc came down from his apartment and his yellow scooter was gone! He raced to the local towing yard with fingers crossed it was there, but it was not. Frustrated with his bad luck, he returned home, and learned from neighbours they saw his scooter being taken towards the next street. At the same time Marc was searching for his vehicle, Gord, the sec...urity guard for our Property Management company, noticed something strange. He saw a group of people dragging a yellow scooter along the alley and tucking it out of site on the property. He spoke to the group, acknowledged their strange behaviour, and questioned them about its owner. 'It belongs to our "friend"' they said, and walked away. Gord didn't believe it. He kept an eye on it and made his presence known every time the group circled back to it. Gord is not a stranger to the CPC. He often comes in with a variety of items he has found on his rounds. So Gord pops in to the CPC and asks for advice. We ran the plate. It was not reported stolen, but the suspicious circumstances in which it ended up under his care warranted police involvement. The scooter came to our office, Gord went back to work, and we waited. Shortly afterwards, Gord is stopped by Marc, who, using the information from his neighbours, has gone down the street looking for his yellow scooter. Could it be? Is this the "friend" or is this the legitimate owner? Gord brings Marc to the CPC. After some clarifying questions are asked, proof of ID and proof of ownership is produced, and keys presented, Marc is reunited with his ride. AND we are able to give him our last scooter brake lock to help deter any future theft. Turned out to be Marc's lucky day after all.

Happy Anniversary to our Executive Director! It was 10 years ago today when Aleya joined our team officially. She started as a volunteer with Grandview Woodland Community Policing Centre and during the 2010 Winter Olympics she came downtown to help us out. Five months later she came to stay. She has provided guidance to nearly 600 volunteers and she says she has met and worked with some of the most amazing staff and Vancouver Police Department officers. Thank you Aleya, for leading the CPC, and for all the positive changes that have come under your leadership.

$5 Friday Fundraiser! The West End-Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre is a not-for-profit. Like many other non-profits, our operations and our ability to raise funds for overhead costs have been affected by the pandemic. The City of Vancouver - Local Government Vancouver Police Department funding does not cover our entire budget, so each year we conduct multiple community-based fundraising events to cover the difference. We have not and will not be able to have any c...ommunity events this year due to COVID-19. Additionally, we are unsure what the future of our Community Policing Centre will be now that the Mayor has announced there will be cuts to the VPD budget. So we need your help. We need to get our office program reinstated and we want to conduct an open-air office in the community in some of the trouble areas, like Jim Deva Plaza. We cant do these things without protection for our staff and volunteers. Our safety plan includes plexiglass shields in our office located at 1267 Davie Street and a tent with barriers for the open-air office. To cover these new costs, and to help with some of our existing operating costs, we need to raise $5,000 immediately. So on Friday, June 5th, please donate to our $5 Friday Fundraising Campaign so we can raise $5,000. Keep with the theme and donate an amount with a five (5) in it (e.g. $15, $25, $50, etc). We are a registered charity so any donation over $20 gets a tax receipt. To make a donation, please click here: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/49582 Thanks in advance for your support and we hope to see you again soon.

Success! Our Commercial Safety Team and foot patrol activity has been back for a few weeks so the trial period is officially complete! Our Board Acting Vice President audited our safety procedures and gave us the green light to not only continue, but to increase gradually. We also commenced the trial period for our Speed Watch activity. Two more weeks and then an audit. Fingers crossed!! Heres what things have looked like for us since May 4th.
