Today is November 1st. Hooray- you've given your pets heartworm meds monthly and have this last dose left to give. Even though we finish this month with heartworm prevention we still recommend you treat your pet YEAR ROUND with flea and treat control like Bravecto or Credelio.

Have you had the pleasure of meeting our new Veterinarian on staff? We are very excited to welcome Dr. John-Paul Settimi to our West Niagara family! Dr. John-Paul Settimi was born and raised in Grimsby, Ontario, where he spent most of his time playing team sports and volunteering at many of the local animal hospitals. After high school, he completed an honours degree in medical science at Western University in 2015, and soon after graduated from the Doctor of Veterinary Medi...cine program at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2019. Dr. Settimi kickstarted his career at a small animal practice in the Haldimand-Norfolk region, and is now part of our team at West Niagara Animal Hospital! He has a particular interest in internal medicine and hopes to pursue further training in alternative medicine including acupuncture in the future. During his free time, Dr. Settimi enjoys hiking and cycling with his partner, as well as spending time with family. He has welcomed two beloved rescue animals into his home: an Australian shepherd named Maverick and an orange tabby cat named Louie, whom are now inseparable. Dr. Settimi is very excited to join our team and meet all the fantastic clients and their pets!

Halloween can be the spookiest night of the year, but keeping your pets safe doesn’t have to be tricky. The ASPCA recommends taking these simple, common sense precautions to keep your pet happy and healthy all the way to November 1. 1. Be Careful with Costumes For some pets, wearing a costume may cause undue stress. If you do dress up your pet for Halloween, make sure the costume does not limit his or her movement, sight or ability to breathe, bark or meow. Check the costume ...carefully for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could present a choking hazard. 2. Keep Pets Calm and Easily Identifiable 3. Watch the Decorations and Keep Wires Out of Reach 4. Stash the treats See more

Temperature often drives tick activity. Blacklegged ticks (the ticks associated with Lyme disease), for example, can be active anytime it’s 4C and above. Make sure your dog is on tick control medication for as long as ticks are out there! Our current recommendation for our geographical area is to have year round protection. Call the office if you are unsure if your pet is protected.... #ThinkAgain #12Weeks See more

Karen is proud to be an RVT! "I love the profession because I am always learning! I am lucky to be with a strong group here at the hospital who feel the same way. I enjoy continuing education and learning new hands-on techniques. Surgery is one of my favorite aspects of my day- seeing a pet through prep, monitoring anesthesia, being there with them in recovery and then discharging them to their owners. " Karen commutes to us from Ridgeway where she shares her home with her husband and 2 children, 3 cats, one dog and a few fish which keeps her busy!
