That time of the year again! Everything revolves around: weight loss, diets, and New Year’s Resolution. As a nutrition and fitness expert, I am going to be honest and straight forward with you. Diets don’t help or support you. I am sure that you are thinking you’ve gone on diets before and they’ve worked ... My question for you is this: why would you need to go on another one if the the first one worked? Allow me to remind you that these FAD diets are quick fixes and designed to act like a band aid. They are very unrealistic and designed to either restrict dietary carbohydrates or dietary fats. How many times have you rebounded from a failed diet? As you probably know , Each time, you have gained more weight after losing it. After giving up, you got off track, stopped exercising, and started eating poorly again. Food doesn’t cause this rebound. It’s the LIFESTYLE factors. So instead of going on a diet, try these approaches: Sustainable and self-nourishing. Address lifestyle factors to start change and fundamental habits. Make a commitment to change. Create consistency beyond 30 days. Find what works best for your body to maintain. I am not quitting! I am taking a break Taking a break is beneficial not only for our physical health but also for our mental and spiritual well-being.... Maybe you are brain washed by a society that convinces No Days Off. Maybe you are nervous that if you take time off, you might miss out or get left behind. Maybe you are a workaholic. Maybe you only know how to keep moving and don’t know how to take a moment to breathe. Maybe you feel you shouldn’t or can’t. YOU MUST! Give yourself permission to just relax and get some fresh air. Take advantage of spending time alone as well . Know that it’s okay to turn the noises off to reflect and meditate. Prepping a batch of organic rolled oats( not quick oats) for the next two days ahead to save me time for my workout routine and morning reading. The fiber in oats takes a bit longer to digest. This means it will take longer for my body to break down, as well as it will keep me full for longer. You don’t need any kitchen skills to prepare this healthy brekkie option. About 10 mins of your time to make this nutritious meal : 1 Cup of Oats to 1 Cup of liquid. I used organi...c milk here for a dairy free option ; but you can use milk as well. How awesome is this? Tips: Soak over night adding: Your favourite seeds Vanilla Add as many toppings as you want when serving . When we take a holistic perspective about food, counting calories is useless. Your body is sacred. Treat it with respect. Aim to eat a wide range of whole, less, or none processed food. The results will be your evidence This is my post-workout meal after teaching STRONG -HIIT class last night Since my goal is to gain muscle mass, I go for food that is appropriate for my daily activities and workouts. ... I put my body through lots of intense hard work ; therefore I have to make sure that it’s getting nutrients to help with healing and recovery . I take advantage of preparing a meal that has appropriate serving of lean protein, lower in healthy fats (turkey sausage), and of course has appropriate serving of carbohydrates. In this case I have added a mixed of simpler + slower digesting carbohydrates: ( white beans, zucchini, red and green peppers, sweet potatoes, wild mushrooms, kale, parsley, garlic). Since I love my olives, I added about 4 to balance my meal with dense-fats Food preparation skills are part of who I am. I have helped my own body heal from : Gestational Diabetes, H.Pylori Ulcer. This is my Sunday putting together this week’s meal. Like you, I am juggling a million things, business, credentials, my mental health, teaching classes, practicing my choreography, helping my family, this, and that... You got the picture. There were times when I mastered it all, and times when I failed and felt like giving up on my commitment to make healthier choices with food. Yes, you heard me, I sometimes eat unhealthy food. So what! It’s not the first or last time... either. I allow myself for days like this weekend to indulge in foods that I know are unhealthy for my body and mind. But I pick myself up and get back on my journey to wellness. I have dedicated Sundays to prepare healthy and nutrient dense dishes that will prepare me for my busy week, and take away the stress in case I don’t have time to cook during certain days. We all have that voice of reason that kicks in when we allow it. And it sure helps us make better choices when it comes to our well-being. But sometimes, it’s gets a bit tricky, especially when we have so much going on. That’s ok, don’t beat yourself up.
