Happy #BreastFeedingWeek and #ChestFeedingWeek! Five reasons why breast milk is amazing: 1. Complete Nutrition - Breast milk has the perfect balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins and minerals for your baby. The nutrients in breastmilk help your baby achieve optimal physical and mental health. 2. Protects Against Disease - Breast milk protects your baby against illness. Colostrum: milk that is produced immediately after birth, coats the digestive tract to protec...t your baby from harmful germs. Breastfeeding reduces the risk of ear and lung infections, diarrhea, obesity, and SIDS. 3. Good For Mothers Health - breastfeeding can protect mothers from diseases such as breast and ovarian cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. 4. Bonding - the closeness and comfort of breastfeeding strengthens the attachment between the mother and child. Having close contact with your baby during infancy can help your baby be more trusting and confident as they grow older. 5. Easy on the Environment and your wallet - Breast milk is made and delivered right to your baby - free of processing, packaging, and cost! For years now, people in Jane Finch have been working on a vision for an arts and culture hub on unused land that was bought for the Finch LRT. People from the ...community have put in so much time, energy and resources getting input (some 1500 people have contributed to this vision), part of which you can see in the rendering prepared by architects for the Community Action Planning Group (a resident group) and the Jane Finch Centre (who I work for). Now Metrolinx - a government agency that committed to handing over this land - is saying they are going to sell it at market rate instead, disavowing the commitments they made to the community. In the last few weeks, there has been considerable attention paid to looking at why some areas of Toronto have been disproportionately impacted by the covid-19 pandemic, and investment as well as social infrastructure (or lack thereof) has been cited as contributing factors. The Black Creek area, which has among the lowest equity scores in the city (in terms of income, unemployment, housing stock etc) and has seen little in the way of investment for decades now, has been among the worst hit by the pandemic. Yet in spite of the need, the promises, and the expectations, the community is being told that they dont matter. This is just one example of how what awaits working class communities and people as the economic downturn starts to take hold, and a more vicious austerity agenda begins to unfurl.

Today marks National Indigenous Peoples Day. Being so close to International Day of the Refugee and Juneteenth, we are forced to look at the shared colonial history between black and indigenous people around the globe. Colonization is the shared thread between indigenous and black people, which resulted in the genocide, displacement and trauma that has impacted generations.... We recognize that the healing of black and indigenous communities are both uniquely tied in their colonial history and distinctly separate in how healing must happen. We recognize, that most of us in Canada, have been here for a mere moment in time compared to First Nations, Inuit and Mtis that have been here for millennia. Caring for and being stewards of the land, water and air that is now compromised. As inhabitants of Turtle Island, we recognize that we stand on sacred ground held by and cared for by the First People. As settlers in Canada, we must be active in dismantling the systems of power that continue to marginalized indigenous communities. In Canada this means actively working towards Truth and Reconciliation, and demanding accountability for missing and murdered indigenous women across this country, as a start to healing. We must acknowledge our collective shame and ignorance for allowing atrocities and violence to continue happen and actively take steps to remedy this. At WEM we make an active commitment towards dismantling these systems of oppression - particularly how they impact healthcare and care for pregnant people and families. In closing, we would like to recognize some of the amazing organizations in Toronto that are supporting Canadas Indigenous Communities. Hello everyone, WEM takes the wellbeing of our BIPOC community and the Black Lives Matter Movement very seriously. We have published statements on our other social media platforms with the intent of showing our solidarity and sharing resources which we think are important to support during this time. However, we feel there is more to be said. We wanted to share a more in depth letter on how we feel about the events going on in the U.S and in Canada. This letter depicts ...our personal experiences of witnessing racial inequality in the healthcare system and other institutions. Moving forward we pledge to listen, learn, and act against racial injustices. Due to length, we have attached a link to our website for those of you whom would like to read it. Thank you https://www.westendmidwives.ca//20/6/20/black-lives-matter

Today is #WorldRefugeeDay, a day dedicated to raising awareness and showing our support for the millions of refugees who have fled their homes due to war, violence, and persecution. WEM is proud to have delivered the babies of many refugee families over the years. Almost half of our clientele are refugees or those living without immigration status. We continue to stay committed to providing the best care possible for people and families as they transition to life in Canada. #WorldRefugeeDay #WorldRefugeeDay2020 #WithRefugees #WestEndMidwives
