Our first field trip of 2020 was to the Vancouver Recital Society's concert on Sunday, January 12th. We heard the performance of George and Andrew Li performing a program of one piano four hands; piano solo, and 2 pianos. The students could not get over how "in sync" they were with each other. By far the most popular piece was Ravel's "La Vase for 2 pianos". We can't wait for our next 2 field trips in February - The Barber of Seville Opera and Yuja Wang.
The Western Conservatory's final student field trip for 2019 was to a performance of Handel's Messiah by the Bach Choir and soloists at the Orpheum Theatre. Polling the students for their favourite choruses, I was greatly surprised that the Hallelujah Chorus was not number one. The Trumpet Shell Sound/Amen and For Unto Us A Child Is Born tied for number one. We all went home definitely in the Christmas spirit. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone.
Richard Haack, Principal of the Western Conservatory of Music, wins prestigious award from the Royal Conservatory of Music. See article below.
The Western Conservatory of Music had it's first field trip this year to the Vancouver Opera's production of La Traviata by Verdi. Twenty-three members of the school saw an outstanding performance. Emily Dorn, who played Violetta (Valery), was by far the star of the show. Her singing sent goosebumps up our arms. She is sure to have an outstanding career. She comes from Mississauga, Ontario and is one of our own. Us Canadians should be proud. The opera was set in the roaring 20's. Sets and costumes, as you can see from the photo, were splendid. Students are anxiously awaiting the next opera field trip in February to The Barber of Seville by Rossini.
CONGRATULATIONS! Western Conservatory of Music students had a very successful 2019 KPU International Music Festival, celebrating it's 20th year. All placed with a Gold or Silver standing in their classes. In addition, Catherine Wong received a scholarship for the Most Promising Intermediate Pianist at the festival. She studies with Mr. Richard Haack, the school's principal. Catherine (12 years old) is an artist in more ways than one! She has been playing piano for almost 6 ye...ars, and she has won awards at the Kiwanis Fraser Valley International Music Festival in 2017 (Outstanding Performance Medallion -Solo Piano Junior Division) and 2018 (Concerto Medallion - Outstanding Performance). Additionally, she is a budding artist and enjoys drawing, painting and digital art. She won the Raymond James Ltd "Share the Holiday Spirit" Greeting Card Contest in 2017 and 2018, and she had some winter drawings displayed at the Western Conservatory of Music school this past Christmas as well. She uses her talent to regularly volunteer at school initiatives, making posters for special events and fundraiser sales. If you want to see more of Catherine's art, she's on Instagram @catherine_creaes_art. See more
