Master of Media in Journalism & Communication 30.10.2020

Introducing Samantha! Why did you apply to MMJC? I chose to apply to MMJC because I felt that my passion for creative writing got lost during my undergraduate degree. When I saw there was a program that incorporated digital communications, creative writing and an internship I couldn’t believe it and knew this was the program for me! ... What is your favourite course so far? Hmm this is a tricky question because I am already using the lessons from my courses in my everyday life. From discussions about ethics in reporting, designing websites, video storytelling or communicating, I have learned so much from this program in the past three months. If I were to pick a favourite, it would have to be either the Intro to Communications or Social Media and Digital Dojo. The reason I am most excited about these two courses is because communications is my passion and I love learning about different technology and techniques/methods of communication. Anything you’d like to add? I love the practice elements of the program. For example, the Intro to Communications course has given me the opportunity to work with a local non-profit organization and create a communications review for them. This experience has not only allowed me to practice all of the new skills I have learned throughout the course, but also help a local NPO and advise them on how to improve their communications. Using skills I learned in class AND helping the community? I’m kind of in love with this type of learning!

Introducing our first Alumni Feature, Tina Donati! What was your favourite project to do in MMJC, and why? My favourite MMJC project was the communications audit in the first term. My team chose to work with a non-profit organization called Community Living. It was interesting to meet the communications manager and talk about their website and social media marketing strategy. It felt like a real working experience. My team also decided to wear suits for a dramatic effect whe...n we presented our audit to our classmates! It was so fun. Did you get a job out of your internship? Yes! MMJC prepares you so incredibly well for any career in media. I interned for a marketing agency, and the company actually terminated my internship early to hire me full time just after one month! It was crazy and I'll be forever grateful to MMJC for preparing me so well for that position. Are you still friends with your classmates? My close friends from MMJC will literally be friends of mine for life. We have a Facebook group chat where we still talk every single day about news, bounce ideas off each other or just have a good laugh. I met some of my best friends in MMJC who will be standing up with me at my wedding, MCing the wedding reception and attending to celebrate with me! What did you study in undergrad? I studied a mix of things during my undergrad. I have a bachelor of arts in sociology with a double minor in English Literature and writing studies. I originally thought I wanted to be a social worker, but when I fell in love with writing I knew my career path was in for a change. That's when I discovered MMJC. This program has made my career dreams come true and I'm so thankful for being able to attend.
