Our V.P. of U.S. Lumber Operations, Chester Fort, posted this on Linkedin during Black History Month. Chester was instrumental in coordinating West Fraser's donation to the Daisy Bates House Museum, the home of the civil rights activist. Here's what he had to say: "I'm very proud to be supporting the Daisy Bates foundation. We have now officially established four scholarships at the Strong/Huttig School in her name. ... Loretta and I are proud to finance one of those scholarships and continue to give back and help someone. We should take full advantage of our opportunities and achieve new goals daily. The world is not perfect, but we should always work to stay strong and positive. We can't have a pity party every day. Life will always have challenges. Face challenges, learn and grow from them. I thank everyone that paved the way and coached and supported me in my personal journey. A special thanks to Loretta for staying with me in good times and rough times. This kid from Bluff City, Arkansas is now responsible for the largest lumber producer in the U.S. South and the world. If I can, you can. Stop making excuses and wake up at 4am every day and grind. Now we are planning something special for the Prescott School District in the name of Bluff City. My Black History Story." Building relations in Clinton, B.C. Our Canadian mills donated $83,000 worth of materials to the Clinton Assisted Living Centre to help build one wing in the new building. The entire project will have a total of 20 units for seniors in the community, with funding coming from Housing B.C.... By having the donation of building materials, the organizers with the seniors' centre can use the saved money to build a proper commercial kitchen.

Our U.S. operations are delighted on the occasion of Mrs. Daisy Bates’ birthday to announce a $35,000 donation to the Daisy Bates House Museum. Daisy Bates was a civil rights activist, NAACP president and mentor to the nine teenagers (now known as the Little Rock Nine) who ultimately desegregated Central High School in Arkansas. Her home became the official pick-up and drop-off site for the Little Rock Nine's trips to and from Central High School each school day. West Fraser’s operations are proud to contribute to this important historical site, a donation that will help to continue her focus on the importance of education. Check out a few photos from the event at the home today!

This month, two of our community engagement coordinators took part in Driftpile FNs Family Cultural Day Camp in Northern Alberta. In Cree, the camp was called Mamawi Kapesiwin, meaning to gather together, camping together. The three-week-long cultural camp incorporated traditional land-based teachings such as making bow and arrows, learning about medicinal plants, survival skills, and Tipi teachings. Events like this give us, as WF employees, an opportunity to engage with the local members of these communities. This interaction is an important part of relationship building, says Doug Gladue, one of West Frasers coordinators.
