West Kootenay Hiking 22.12.2020

Winter is here! There are a number of great snowshoe trails in the West Kootenay, including the cabins around the Rossland Range. Keep in mind the cabins and many facilities are closed or restricted this year due to COVID-19. https://westkootenayhiking.ca/mt-crowe-cabin-loop/

Sunset is now at 4:30pm in Nelson! It's important to get an early start and plan to complete your hike during daylight hours. Always bring a headlamp and extra batteries just in case. Photo is from the White Queen Trail above Whitewater Ski Resort on October 31, 2020. It's a winter wonderland up there.... https://westkootenayhiking.ca/bird-queen-trail/

I've published a colouring book with my favourite hiking trails and mountain landscapes! You can colour in the golden larches at Monica Meadows, the turquoise Lyle Lakes, the rainbow of wildflowers at Idaho Peak, and so much more! This book makes a great winter activity or holiday gift. A portion of sales is being donated to the Nelson Community Food Centre... Find the book at local stores now - details in the post below.

What is the shoulder season? It's the spring and fall months when things are quieter here in the Kootenays with less visitors. Shoulder season hikes are usually snow-free from March to November. They stay at lower elevation and are often closer to communities. Perfect fall hiking now that the alpine is filling up with snow again! https://westkootenayhiking.ca//trail/shoulder-season-hike/

Snow is returning to the alpine, but the fall colours are beautiful down in the valleys! It's time to start thinking about lower-elevation trails again! One of my favourite shoulder season trips is the Mel Deanna Trail. It's maintained by the Castlegar Parks & Trails Society and is a great family fall hike. https://westkootenayhiking.ca/mel-deanna/
