Nelson Running Club 02.01.2021

Sunday Long Slow Distance: 1:00 p.m., meet in the Lakeside Park lot under the orange bridge. We'll do a lap of the Lakeside path to the Airport and back, and then across the bridge and down Johnstone Rd and back. Distance TBD... Everything should be mostly clear and snow-free now, so road shoes might be a good option.

EDIT: MOVING TO LAKESIDE PARK INSTEAD OF RAIL TRAIL. MEET UNDER THE ORANGE BRIDGE. Long Slow Sunday: Other than a bit of ice on the bridges, rail trail to Troup is reported to be in decent shape. Meet at the Mountain Station parking lot at 2:00 p.m. for 16-22km, depending on how you’re feeling.

Clear and cold for a Christmas Eve run! Tonight at 6:00, departing from the mall parking lot streetcar shelter for a mellow 5km or so. There might be a bit of wind, so dress appropriately. The pathway is pretty much snow-free, but there could be a few icy puddles on the way. Stay tuned to this page for news about our Resolution Run Club starting in the New Year! Couch-to-5km program, perfect for new runners, or those wanting to get back into it after a long time away.

Tuesday Night Run Club. Mall parking lot streetcar shelter at 6:00 p.m. for 7-9km, easy pace, social and socially-distanced. See you tonight!

Rainy Tuesday: Forecast for tonight at 6:00 p.m. is miserable. Rainy (but warm) with winds 20-40km/h. With the amount of puddles and slop all along the path, I'm thinking I'm skipping tonight, and hoping for either drier or frozen again for next week. If any of you hardier souls are heading out tonight, have a good run and I'll see you next week! -Stephen

Resolution runners: rejoice! If you've been saying to yourself "That is it! No more talking about it, this year I'm getting in shape", then this is a good place to start. This week we start once more on the couch-to-5km program. Thursday nights, 6:00 p.m., starting from the streetcar shelter in the main mall parking lot, across from Marks. The goal is to be an easy intro (or re-intro) to running. It's a walk-run program that gradually builds over the next two months, getting ...you to a place where you can comfortably jog 5km in 30-or-so minutes. The Thursday night group is there for a bit of social accountability and moral support. Ideally, you're repeating each week's session another one or two times throughout the week on your own. The sessions will be along the Lakeside Path through the park, so it's decently well-lit, but a headlamp is helpful. Trail running shoes (rather than street-running shoes) are a safer option, as they have some tread and grip. The path is often snow-free, or at least, partially gravel-exposed. If it's really icy, using grippers like Kahtoola Microspikes or YakTrax are recommended, or you can go my preferred cheap-and-easy route with some #8 1/4" or 1/2" hex-head sheet metal screws into the perimeter of the sole. We'll keep COVID-friendly (running outside is one of the safest activities), so while it's a 'sociable' run, please don't come if you're sick or coughing. 2m spacing is basically the default for running anyway. Please comment below if you're coming, and tag friends who should be here! This isn't anything specifically 'organized', other than by a few of us looking to help folks in the community get into running. There's no charge. If you're a more advanced runner and willing to come out on Thursdays for an easy walk-run and able to share advice and tips for newbies, we'd love to have you too!

Tuesday easy/social: Waterfront from the mall parking lot streetcar shelter at 6:00 p.m. 8km or so along the waterfront path: airport / lakeside / John's Walk loop. Snow-free for most of it down there, but may be icy spots by tonight. See you at 6! -Stephen

Sunday Long: Now that Whitewater is in full swing, we'll push back the start time of our weekly long run so we can get some turns at the hill in the a.m.! 2:00 p.m. at the Mountain Station parking lot, down to Troup and back for 16km, and then an optional extra 6km to the first bridge and back. It'll be warm and rainy tonight, so the trail should be snow-free below Svoboda, but might still be some compact/slushy/icy sections above the cemetery. Spikes/screw shoes might be a decent option. -Stephen

Well, no clear consensus on an alternate day/time for Tuesday night runs, so we'll stick with the status quo for now. 6:00 p.m. at Lakeside streetcar shelter for an easy 7-9km. See you tonight! -Stephen

We're taking advantage of the sunshine, and moving the Sunday Long to today. If anyone's interested, meeting at Lakeside Park parking lot at 12:00, and doing the waterfront path out to Red Sands, and back to the end of the airport/dog walk, x2 at an easy pace. Right around 20km total. Might be icy in some of the shady spots, so spike up! -Stephen

Beginners / easy run club tonight, 6 p.m. at the streetcar shelter in the mall parking lot. 5km or so at an easy pace. No pressure; we'll take walk breaks as needed. The snow/ice is gone down at the path, but it'll likely be a bit puddly. See you tonight! -Stephen

Tuesday nighter! Waterfront trail may be a little wet and slushy, but shouldn't be icy. Sociable, easy-pace 7-9km, starting from the streetcar shelter in the main mall parking lot, heading along the trail past the Prestige and along dog walk to the end of the airport and back, and then heading down the other way through Lakeside park and John's Walk, and then back home.
