Westlock Town Council passed the Face Covering Bylaw 2020-22 at the October 26, Regular Meeting of Council. Effective Wednesday, October 28, 2020, it is mandat...ory for members of the public to wear a face covering or mask at all times while in a public place or a public vehicle. What is a face covering? Essential workers being recognized! At a time when businesses are struggling to meet their own needs and trying to stay afloat amid the global pandemic crisis, ...the Calgary SCOPE Society received a generous donation of sweets, cookies, chocolates, baking kits, pasta and every other food item sure to pack on the "pandemic pounds. This donation was facilitated by a long-term employee, Jarred Nicklen, in the Journeys Program at SCOPE, who also happens to work full-time as a manager at retail giant, HomeSense. When his store was looking to donate thousands of dollars to charity of delectable edibles, he recommended SCOPE as the recipient. We so appreciate that HomeSense gave us the opportunity to give back to our staff in this small way. When we went to pick up the items, we were astonished at the shear amount of the donated items and immediately thought that the best way to pay this forward was to create gift bags for all our hardworking staff that are working long hours, at risk to their own selves and families to provide amazing support to our clients. We know that a simple gift bag does not compensate the staff for the job they are doing, but we wanted the staff to know that they are important to the clients, the families and guardians, their supervisors, the management team and the Calgary SCOPE Society Board of Directors. It is a small token that says, "We see all that you do, you are essential and you are valued". Our staff have had to endure schedule changes, learn new processes and procedures and provide support to vulnerable people who are also experiencing uncertainty and fear. These staff have stepped forward, not back from this crisis and although they have not received the recognition and compensation they deserve from the government, the management team is extremely proud of the work that our staff continue to perform at the highest level. Special thanks to the Journeys team members, you know who you are, for putting together these bags. You are amazing! We so appreciate that HomeSense gave us the opportunity to give back to our staff in this small way.
ADWA is spearheading a wage increase campaign for disability support workers. Our workers are long overdue for a wage hike that finally recognizes their essential work in these challenging times of course, but all the time. You can help! Check them out on Facebook and follow the links to their website for details. Today, they are hosting a live Facebook event https://www.facebook.com/ABDisabilityWorkersAssociation/
